Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Rail Operations Supervisor to manage the overall performance of a Railserve operation and lead teams across rail switching, track maintenance, transloading, and equipment operation.

You will ensure safety, drive cost management, training, and succession planning while maintaining customer satisfaction and compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience supervising rail operations, logistics, manufacturing, transportation, or related field required.
  • Railroad experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage overall performance of a Railserve operation.
  • Lead employees engaged in rail switching, track maintenance, transloading, equipment operation, and related industrial services.
  • Maintain safe, efficient operations in accordance with customer expectations.
  • Provide leadership for employees and serve as the primary point of contact for employees and customers.
  • Support workforce planning, safety compliance, operational execution, cost management, and employee development.
  • Maintain a safe work environment through employee training and operational oversight.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain required certifications, qualifications, and training records.
  • Lead, coach, and develop employees across operational functions.
  • Identify high-potential employees and support succession planning.
  • Develop work schedules and staffing plans.
  • Ensure operations meet customer expectations and contractual obligations.
  • Manage payroll, fuel, equipment, and operational costs.
  • Oversee purchase orders and site expenditures.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance programs with mechanical teams.
  • Monitor operational performance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Build and maintain customer relationships.
  • Address customer concerns and operational service needs.
  • Manage timekeeping, performance evaluations, reporting, and operational documentation.
  • Complete customer and company-required reports accurately and on time.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, employee development, and performance management.
  • Work with regional leadership to maintain service quality, improve operational performance, and develop future leaders.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience in rail operations, logistics, manufacturing, transportation, or a related field required
  • Previous railroad experience preferred
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and employee development skills
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating procedures, and technical instructions
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and operational documentation
  • Ability to analyze operational data and performance metrics
  • Reliable transportation required
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as needed
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check
  • Military experience is a plus
  • Must be available to support all shifts
  • Nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call responsibilities may be required
  • Outdoor industrial work environment with exposure to varying weather conditions, locomotives, railcars, heavy equipment, moving mechanical parts, fumes, and industrial operations
  • Moderate physical activity including walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting
  • Safety-sensitive leadership position requiring strict compliance with company and customer safety standards
