Job summary

Simon, a Colas USA subsidiary, invites students to join its internship program in Rapid City, SD. This role provides hands-on experience across administrative and operational areas, with mentorship and networking opportunities to complement academic studies in business, engineering, and construction management.

Responsibilities

  • Support safety initiatives and follow the Safety Steering and CI teams' guidelines.
  • Assist project teams with planning, cost control, and scheduling tasks.
  • Coordinate material purchases, deliveries, and forecasting.
  • Engage in customer relationship development activities.
  • Operate basic heavy equipment and perform related tasks.
  • Contribute to project work and complete internship requirements.

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, assists construction personnel in planning and building work by optimizing resource utilization and minimizing costs as part of the Company's internship program.

Simon's internship program is designed to provide first‑hand exposure to industry operations, as well as 1:1 mentorship and networking opportunities to students in order to supplement college educational programs in the areas of business, engineering, and construction management. Students in the program have the opportunity to work in various administrative and operational areas, contribute to company goals through completion of focused project work, and apply concepts learned in the classroom to business operations.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Embrace the Company's safety culture, actively support all safety initiatives, and adhere to defined accountabilities implemented by the Safety Steering and Continuous Improvement teams
  • Support, promote, and practice the Company core values, vision, and mission; follow code of ethics, workplace conduct, safety, and other established policies
  • Assist with ensuring the highest standards are achieved and maintained in terms of safety, environmental performance, quality, and efficiency; including compliance with MSHA, OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Assist the project team in establishing the sequential steps involved in all processes with the scope of the project, including bid processes and contract development; may attend pre‑bid and planning meetings
  • Work closely with the project team monitoring the safety, cost and scheduling of construction projects
  • Assist with coordination of material purchases, deliveries, tracking and forecasting ensuring maximum utilization of company resources
  • Participate in activities related to development and maintenance of customer relationships
  • Operate heavy equipment
  • Perform manual and skilled labor tasks
  • Complete other projects as a part of the internship program requirements
Education:
  • Enrollment in a relevant degree program, including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving history required
Skills:
  • Previous construction or intern experience preferred
  • Ability to use computers efficiently including MS Word and Excel required
  • Knowledge of other computer programs dealing with take‑offs, bidding, etc. preferred
Physical Requirements:
  • Travel required; in some roles travel may be extensive and/or require overnight stays
  • Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by company safety guidelines
  • Regularly required to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel
  • Regularly required to communicate (talk and hear)
  • Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Standing/working on feet for long periods, and walking across uneven terrain
