Gwinnett County Public Schools seeks an Educational Interpreter to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in mainstream classrooms and activities, using ASL and spoken English to facilitate communication.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field is required.
  • EIPA Level 3.5+ or RID/NAD certification required.
  • Two years of interpreting experience required.
  • Proficiency in ASL/English with ability to articulate between sign and voice.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues and represent GCPS.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as liaison between the D/HH Program and mainstream programs.
  • Refer regular education staff questions about the D/HH student to the D/HH case manager.
  • Interpret all mainstream classes for D/HH students.
  • Interpret for extracurricular activities as requested by supervisor.
  • Participate in IEP meetings as a member of the IEP team when requested.
  • Support the needs of students as determined by the IEP.
  • Remain current in the field through workshops, meetings, and literature.
  • Maintain current credentials and provide evidence to the LEA as requested.
  • Clarify the role of interpreter to all parties concerned.
  • Maintain impartial attitude and confidentiality per RID Code of Ethics.
  • Participate in staff duties/responsibilities per local policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

License and Certification Qualifications:
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)- Level 3.5 or higher, or 2 Required or
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/National Association for the Deaf (NAD) Certification Required
Education Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in related field Required
Experience Qualifications:
  • 2 years of interpreting experience Required

Primary Responsibilities:

Responsible for effectively facilitating communication among Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their hearing peers, mainstream classroom teachers, and other personnel in the school system through the use of American Sign Language and spoken English.

  • Serve as the liaison between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Program and mainstream programs.
  • Refer regular education staff questions or inquiries concerning the D/HH student to the D/HH case manager.
  • Interpret all mainstream classes for D/HH students.
  • Interpret for extracurricular activities in accordance with local school policies and practices as requested by supervisor.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as a member of the IEP team when requested.
  • Support the needs of students as determined by the IEP.
  • Remain current in field of educational interpreting through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field.
  • Perform ongoing maintenance of current credentials and providing evidence to the Local Education Agency (LEA) as requested. .
  • Clarify the role of interpreter to assist all parties concerned.
  • Maintain an impartial attitude and guard confidentiality in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics.
  • Participate in staff duties/responsibilities in accordance with local school policies and practices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, negotiate stairs, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear, manipulate tools and small items with hands, and lift and transport up to 50 pounds over short distances. The employee is required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision. The employee may be subjected to a wide range of ambient temperature and humidity conditions while working on equipment under varying conditions including overhead work and work in confined spaces. Potential hazards of this position include working with electricity, working with heat and noise producing machinery and equipment, working on elevated equipment using ladders or other lifting devices, and use of chemicals and solvents.
