Educational Sign Language Interpreter (School-Based)

Position Overview

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a trained professional who facilitates communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and others within an educational setting. Using American Sign Language (ASL), the interpreter conveys spoken language into sign language and vice versa, ensuring students have equitable access to classroom instruction, educational activities, and learning discussions.

Minimum Requirements

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, or a related field preferred
• State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate (as required by state regulations)
• Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification (as required by state regulations or client requirements)
• Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification (as required by state regulations or client requirements)
• Compliance with all applicable professional standards of practice
• Current CPR certification, if required
• TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest X-ray, if required
• Current health certificate, if required by contract or state regulations
• Ability to meet all federal, state, and local requirements
• Must be at least 18 years of age
