Job summary

Capital-Area-Intermediate-Unit is seeking a qualified Educational Interpreter to provide sign language interpretation and transliteration in K-12 settings under the PA CAIU system. You will support students’ educational programs by interpreting in classrooms and at school-sponsored activities.

Responsibilities include working with D/HH students, following IEPs, maintaining confidentiality, and upholding RID ethics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • EIPA score 3.5 (4.0 preferred).
  • Ability to interpret/transliterate in ASL, PSE, and related modes.
  • Proficient computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook) and general tech aptitude.

Responsibilities

  • Provide interpreting/transliterating in all situations according to students' IEPs.
  • Provide interpreting/transliterating for school activities for Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality per RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Contribute to orientations for staff about hearing loss and the interpreter’s role.

Job description

Salary: This professional position follows the Collective Bargaining Agreement Salary Schedule, starting at Bachelor's, Step 1 - $58,554 for the 26/27 SYSchedule: Monday - Friday, 7.5 hours/day, 190 days/yearJob Goal: To provide sign language interpretation and/or transliteration in the educational environment.Performance Responsibilities:1. Provide interpreting/transliterating in all situations according to the specifications of the student’s IEP.2. Provide interpreting/transliterating for school sponsored activities for staff and/or adults who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH).3. Adhere to CAIU policy related to student confidentiality in all settings.4. Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, especially in applying the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct to the educational setting when providing interpretation/transliteration.5. Participate in the development and presentation of orientations for general education staff and students regarding hearing loss and the role and use of an educational interpreter.6. Prepare for the interpreting/transliterating situation by seeking necessary information from the speaker, and by discussing with the speaker and D/HH individual appropriate adjustments to the physical environments (seating, lighting, acoustics, etc.).7. Promote direct communication between the general education teachers and D/HH teachers without breaching confidentiality as per the Code of Professional Conduct.8. Maintain a portfolio/folder with necessary information/materials to assist a substitute educational interpreter manage his/her assignment in an informed manner.9. Participate in educational team meetings to provide feedback regarding student use of the interpreter including contributing information for the student's IEP.10. In conjunction with D/HH teacher, develop student goals and objectives related to student’s use of the interpreter, provide ongoing assessment, and report student progress towards goals/objectives to the MDE/IEP team.11. When not interpreting or preparing for an interpreting assignment, perform tasks that support students, their education program, and the overall operation of the classroom environment.12. Strive to increase knowledge of the interpreting profession by regularly, reading publications, attending professional development workshops and in-service training, viewing videotapes or CD ROM Interpreter Education materials, and viewing online resources to keep up with current trends in the field.13. Serve as a resource to the educational team by providing information about research-based theory and practices that apply to the field of interpreting.14. Accept responsibility for student interns from a college level Interpreter Training Program.15. Know and comply with host facility’s protocols/rules for staff and students.16. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by Program Supervisor or his/her designee.17. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director or his/her designee.Qualifications:1. Bachelor's Degree required.2. Minimum of 3.5 (4.0 preferred) on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA).3. Ability to draw from a broad spectrum of knowledge in general studies (humanities, sciences, and the arts) and interpreting (theory, psycholinguistics, and ethical behavior specific to the educational setting) in order to interpret K-12 coursework.4. Ability to effectively interpret/transliterate in a variety of modes (American Sign Language, (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE)).5. Ability to meet all mandates that the state of PA requires of Educational Interpreters.6. Proficient computer skills and knowledge including use of Word, Excel, Outlook, and other software as may be required.
