Job summary

HOLT Group is seeking a Shop Service Technician 1 in Austin to perform basic inspections, diagnoses, and repairs of diesel-powered heavy equipment under supervision. This entry-level role supports a team to meet customer needs and departmental goals.

You will follow established procedures, learn to plan repairs, complete parts orders, and maintain a safe, organized work environment while advancing technical skills through training programs.

Qualifications

  • Entry-level position – Generally has less than two years of experience and/or demonstrated job relevant knowledge/skills.
  • Requires reading schematics/diagrams experience preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; graduation from a diesel technology program preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the use of VBL tools and processes to align with Vision, Values, and Mission.
  • Performs basic disassembly and assembly of machine components to manufacturer specifications using hand/pneumatic tools and specialized tooling.
  • Assists in rebuilding, repairing, reconditioning, and maintaining equipment and components.
  • Communicates customer needs to shop management and supports in planning equipment repairs.
  • Updates job knowledge and participates in training paths (e.g., ProTech).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Shop Service Technician 1

Department: Machine Division (MAC)

Employment Type: Full Time

Description

This mechanic position demonstrates the ability to perform basic inspections, basic diagnoses, and basic repairs of diesel-powered heavy equipment and/or related equipment or components, following established procedures and guidelines. Works as a member of a team to provide basic mechanical services that satisfies customer needs and achieves departmental goals.

Entry-level position – Generally has less than two years of experience and/or demonstrated job relevant knowledge/skills. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job; works under immediate supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Models, promotes, reinforces, and rewards the consistent use of HOLT’s Values Based Leadership (VBL) tools, models, and processes to ensure alignment with our Vision, Values, and Mission
  • Performs basic disassembles and assembles of machine components to manufacturer’s specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling
  • Assists in the rebuilding, repairing, reconditioning, and maintaining of equipment and components
  • Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management
  • Learns how to plan equipment and component repairs
  • Learns how to complete parts orders and identify parts for return
  • Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
  • Completes all documents associated with repairs in a timely manner
  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g., ProTech

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment machines such as dozers, excavators, motor graders, and other dirt moving equipent preferred
  • Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems
  • Quality control analysis skills - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings
  • Operation and control skills - Controlling operations of equipment or systems
  • Equipment selection skills - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job
  • Ability to operate a conventional forklift and an overhead crane
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
  • The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects
  • The ability to read, write, and understand information
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Must have/acquire basic mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)
Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • One or more years of diesel-powered heavy equipment repair experience preferred
  • Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams experience is preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Travel:

  • No travel is expected for this position

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
  • Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina
  • Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet and climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment
  • Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment
  • Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work

Work Environment:

  • Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts
  • May be exposed to weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement weather, heat, cold, and humidity
  • Noise level may be loud at times
  • Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, dust, steam, high-pressure water, and high-speed rotating equipment
  • Requires wearing common protective or safety equipment
  • Required to perform work in cramped spaces and/or high places
