Job summary

The Shaw Group is seeking a qualified Shop Combination Welder in Walker, Louisiana. The role involves certifying on multi-process pipe and proficiently performing general welding processes.   • Work under minimum supervision, typically reporting to a supervisor.

Shop Combination Welder

Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe while being proficient in general welding processes.

Must have experience in a Tier 1 Pipe Fabrication Shop.

Basic Qualifications

Successfully pass the on-site Weld Test:

  • All MIG & Fluxcore welds must pass a visual inspection, x‑ray, and bend test.
  • All TIG welds must pass visual inspection and x‑ray.
  • TIG all the way out 2.5” double heavy (552 wall) in a 6G position.
  • MIG & Fluxcore are combined; MIG bead downhill & Fluxcore uphill on 6” 719 wall in a 6G position.
Responsibilities
  • Manually guide the electrode or gun along the weld line, maintaining the length of arc and speed of movement to form the specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Obtain the specified electrode and insert it into a portable holder or thread consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun.
  • Connect cables from the welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by the Welding Engineer.
  • Start the power supply to produce electric current.
  • Strike the arc which generates heat to make and deposit metal from the electrode onto the workpiece and join the edges of the workpiece.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • May clean or degrease the weld joint or workpiece, using a wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.
  • May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • May prepare broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • May chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter using a hand scraper or power chipper.
  • May preheat the workpiece using a hand torch or heating furnace.
  • May position and clamp workpieces together or assemble them in a jig or fixture.
  • May tack assemblies together.
  • May cut metal plates or structural shapes.
  • May be designated under various welding specialization titles (e.g., Welder, Carbon Arc; Welder, Flux‑Cored Arc; Welder, Gas‑Metal Arc; Welder, Gas‑Tungsten Arc; Welder, Hand, Submerged Arc; Welder, Plasma Arc; Welder, Shielded‑Metal Arc).
  • May be required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations.
  • Perform only jobs on which they have been trained and/or authorized.
  • Work in accordance with safe job practices and comply with company safety rules.
  • Use required personal protective equipment.
  • Report unsafe conditions or practices.
  • Cooperate during investigation of any accidents that occur.
  • Take an active part and participate in safety meetings, pre‑job safety briefings, task hazard analyses, and Job Safety Analyses.
  • Have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
  • Rely on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Work under minimum supervision, typically reporting to a supervisor.
