Job description

THOR Solutions is looking for a highly motivated ShipConstructor Modeler to support a design project for the U.S. Navy’s Constellation class Guided-Missile Frigates (FFG62). The candidate will assist in creation of models and shipyard production drawings.

Typical Responsibilities:
  1. 3D Modeling: Create complex 3D models and assemblies using ShipConstructor, accurately capturing all necessary design details and specifications.
  2. CAD Design: Collaborate with engineers and designers to develop CAD models that meet project requirements, including structural, mechanical, and electrical components.
  3. Technical Drawings: Generate precise technical drawings and documentation to communicate design intent, including dimensions, tolerances, and material specifications.
  4. Design Optimization: Assist in the analysis and optimization of designs for manufacturing efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and performance improvements.
  5. Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough reviews and quality checks of your own work to ensure accuracy and adherence to project standards.
  6. Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, designers, and project managers, to meet project goals and deadlines.
  7. Problem Solving: Identify and resolve design issues and provide innovative solutions to design challenges.
  8. Software Proficiency: Stay current with ShipConstructor software updates and industry best practices to maintain a high level of proficiency.
  9. Documentation: Maintain organized records of design files and documentation for future reference and revisions.
Location: Fully remote available within most CONUS locations. An ideal candidate will be local near THOR offices in Virginia Beach, VA and be able to support partial onsite time.

Secret Security Clearance Eligibility Preferred: This position does not require an active security clearance, but an active DoD Secret security clearance or eligibility for a DoD Secret security clearance is highly preferred.

Typical Physical Requirements: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Around 10% travel for visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. High school diploma/GED equivalent.
    • An ideal candidate will possess a technical diploma, professional certification, Associate degree, or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant design or modeling discipline.
  2. At least two (2) years of recent, relevant professional experience as a ShipConstructor Modeler or similar role supporting Navy, Coast Guard, or commercial shipyards. Experience should include:
    • Creating production and shop drawings for shipbuilding
    • Experience modeling for at least one of the following disciplines: mechanical / piping, electronics, and or structural/welding.
  3. Knowledge of CAD principles, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  4. Proficiency in ShipConstructor software, with a portfolio demonstrating 3D modeling and design skills.
  5. Experience with DOD/NAVSEA contracts preferred.
  6. Proficient with common productivity software such as the Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat.
  7. An ideal candidate will possess ShipConstructor certifications such as: SSI Certified User, SSI Certified Professional, or SSI Certified Specialist.
  8. Excellent communication skills.
