Job summary

RYAM in Jesup, GA is seeking a Shift Supervisor in Utilities to lead a designated shift, ensuring safety, reliability and cost control across boilers, evaporators, water treatment and associated systems at the mill.

You will supervise up to 24 staff, coordinate maintenance, monitor steam and power supplies, and ensure compliance with environmental, safety and quality standards while optimizing overall mill performance.

Qualifications

  • Must have supervisory experience in a manufacturing setting (<140 chars).
  • Knowledge of boilers, turbines, evaporators, water treatment systems, and related Utilities equipment.
  • Experience ensuring safety, quality and environmental compliance in plant operations.

  • Supervise up to 24 employees, provide coaching and training, and schedule tasks.
  • Ensure steam, electricity, water, air, and chemical balances for mill operation.
  • Coordinate planned and emergency maintenance with other supervisors.
  • Manage costs related to labor, supplies, and chemicals on shift.
  • Keep records and communicate with management on operation status.

The Shift Supervisor, Utilities leads and manages the manufacturing operations for a designated shift in the Utilities department to optimize overall mill performance and achieve mill objectives. Scope of responsibility include Causticizing, Power Boilers, Recovery Boilers, Evaporators, Turbines, Water Plant, and Waste Treatment system. Scope covers all aspects of ongoing shift operations including safety and housekeeping, quality, production, environmental control, equipment repair and reliability, cost control, chemical and raw material usage, and people management.

How You’ll shape the Future of the Utilities Department:
  • Leads safety efforts on shift to prevent injuries, eliminate hazards, improve housekeeping and comply with all applicable regulations and mill policies. Implements improvement initiatives, corrects unsafe conditions and responds to safety concerns to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Supervises up to 24 people on shift. Manages employee performance and promotes teamwork. Provides appropriate coaching and training to ensure reliable performance and compliance with environmental, safety and quality requirements. Assigns and schedules employees to maximize effectiveness within labor agreement constraints. Addresses performance deficiencies and takes disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • Ensures an optimal supply of steam, electricity, water, air, green and white liquors as required for operation of the mill. Monitors continuous operation of black liquor evaporators, maximizes steam generated from black liquor solids, bark, and fuel burned in the boilers. Maintains steam temperature, make-up water, boiler feed water and boiler chemical concentration.
  • Maintains quality controls within prescribed limits, basing decisions on operating conditions and trends. Maximizes turbine efficiency and monitors purchased power demand. Supervises repairs to equipment and systems.
  • Works with other shift supervisors to coordinate, prioritize and assign shift maintenance activities to address emergency or urgent work orders. Consults with maintenance personnel to ensure equipment repairs are completed in a timely manner. Assigns operating personnel to perform preventive maintenance and maintenance assist activities.
  • Makes periodic rounds of assigned areas to monitor employee and equipment performance, operating conditions, housekeeping, safety, production, quality and environmental performance.
  • Manages the operation and activities on shift to control costs – labor, supplies, general expenses and chemicals.
  • Keep other supervisors informed of overall operations and special problems that may affect them. Coordinates planned and emergency repairs to minimize lost time.
  • Keeps up-to-date personnel records and data. Manages and documents routine labor relations issues, employee counseling and grievances at the first step.
  • Communicates effectively with management to keep them informed and obtain necessary support.

You’ll Be Someone Who Can Bring
  • BS degree in applicable field or equivalent relevant work experience
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a manufacturing supervisory role (utilities operations preferred)
  • Knowledge of operation, care and repair of boilers, turbines, evaporators, pumps, compressors, switchgear, water treatment facilities, lime kilns and causticizing equipment, and all other related Utilities Department equipment.
