Job summary

Lantern Community Services is seeking a Shift Supervisor for a single male adult shelter in Ozone Park, Queens. You will supervise Residential Aides, oversee daily operations, coordinate with partners, and manage incidents to ensure safe service delivery.

Required: high school diploma or GED, 3 years shelter experience, 1 year supervisory experience, and relevant certifications or the ability to obtain them. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred; CPR/First Aid preferred.

  • High School Diploma, HSE, or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of shelter experience in relevant roles.
  • At least one year of supervisory experience in a DHS shelter or supportive housing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong crisis and emergency management abilities.
  • Proficiency with MS Word/Excel; adapt to new databases.
  • F-80 Fire Safety Coordinator certification required or obtainable soon.
  • NYC Food Handler’s Certificate required or obtainable within three months.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication; empathy for vulnerable populations.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred; CPR/First Aid certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily shelter operations during shifts and supervise Residential Aides.
  • Coordinate with Social Services, Maintenance, and Security to ensure safe service.
  • Ensure access to meals, laundry, toiletries, and medications for clients.
  • Lead staff in Safe Crisis Management and respond to emergencies and incidents.
  • Document new/returning clients, bed assignments, and DHS submissions.
  • Monitor CARES bed sign-ins, vacancies, and curfew compliance.
  • Coordinate with maintenance, security, vendors, and emergency responders.
  • Monitor video surveillance and fire alarms; conduct safety rounds.
  • Complete logs, incident reports, and DHS reports; assist with drills.
  • Maintain interior/exterior safety and cleanliness; prevent unauthorized activity.

About The Role

Lantern Community Services is seeking an experienced and dependable Shift Supervisor for a single male adult shelter in Ozone Park, Queens. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for overseeing designated shelter operations during assigned shifts and supervising a team of Residential Aides. This role works in close coordination with Social Services, Maintenance, and Security staff to ensure safe and consistent service delivery. The Shift Supervisor reports to the Director of Program Operations and is expected to have prior experience in site management, staff supervision, and working with clients experiencing mental health challenges

Essential Functions
  • Oversee daily shelter operations during assigned shifts, including bed sign-ins, curfew checks, supply distribution, meal rosters, property storage, locker and dorm inspections, incident reporting, and facility log maintenance.
  • Supervise and support Residential Aides to ensure safe, consistent, and effective service delivery.
  • Ensure clients have timely access to essential services, including meals, laundry, toiletries, and medications.
  • Lead staff in Safe Crisis Management and respond to emergencies and critical incidents.
  • Ensure accurate processing and documentation of new and returning clients, including DHS submissions and bed assignments.
  • Monitor CARES for bed sign-ins, vacancies, and curfew compliance.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance, Security, vendors, and emergency responders as needed.
  • Monitor video surveillance systems and fire prevention/detection alarms.
  • Complete required documentation, including logs, incident reports, and DHS reports.
  • Assist with fire drills, emergency response, and facility safety procedures.
  • Conduct regular interior and exterior rounds to identify safety hazards, cleanliness issues, and unauthorized activity.
Required Education And Experience
  • High School Diploma, HSE, or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of shelter experience (e.g., Residential Aide, Case Manager, or similar role).
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in a DHS shelter or supportive housing setting.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage crises and emergencies effectively.
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word and Excel; ability to learn new systems and databases.
  • F-80 Fire Safety Coordinator certification required or ability to obtain.
  • NYC Food Handler’s Certificate required or ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated empathy for vulnerable populations.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
Work Environment:

This job operates in a shelter environment and works with a population who experiences mental illness, addiction, disability, HIV, and other chronic illnesses.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel. Occasionally, the employee will have to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
