Job summary

Blue Origin in Huntsville, AL is seeking a hands-on supervisor to lead technicians and machinists in fabrication, assembly, and test operations. The role emphasizes safety, quality, and schedule adherence, with responsibilities spanning planning, mentoring, and cross-functional communication.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3+ years in manufacturing ops, test/assembly, or related environment.
  • 1+ year frontline leadership directing technicians or operators.
  • Experience with complex or hazardous systems (cryogenic, high pressure, propellants, etc.).
  • Ability to read and follow procedures, drawings, schematics and manuals.
  • Proven ability to plan daily work while meeting safety, quality and schedule goals.
  • Strong digital-tool proficiency and quick learner of new systems.
  • Willing to work nonstandard hours, travel occasionally, and work in field environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technicians, operators, and machinists in fabrication, assembly, test, and manufacturing with safety and quality focus.
  • Plan, assign, and monitor shift coverage, work centers, overtime, and backup coverage.
  • Ensure work aligns with procedures, instructions, drawings, and safety/quality requirements.
  • Provide hands-on support for integration, checkout, test, and operations of flight and ground systems as needed.
  • Conduct regular performance check-ins, coaching, and mentorship for team members.
  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and recognition for your team.
  • Communicate status, issues, and risks to leadership and partner teams.
  • Drive safety culture; identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Organize root-cause investigations for quality excursions on shift.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvements to safety, quality, efficiency, and repeatability.
  • Maintain clean, organized, compliant work areas (5S, clean-as-you-go, tool/FOD control).

This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will support the design, development, fabrication and assembly of space launch vehicles and components to support human spaceflight programs. This is a hands-on position that requires strong communication, leadership, organization, planning, and management skills. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead technicians/operators/machinists in daytoday fabrication, assembly, test, and/or manufacturing operations with a strong focus on safety, quality, and schedule.

  • Plan, assign, and monitor work (shift coverage, work center assignments, overtime, and backup coverage).

  • Ensure work is performed per approved procedures, work instructions, drawings, and safety/quality requirements.

  • Provide handson technical support for integration, checkout, test, and operations of flight and ground systems as needed.

  • Conduct regular performance checkins and reviews; coach, develop, and mentor team members.

  • Support hiring, onboarding, training, and recognition for your team.

  • Communicate work status, issues, and risks clearly to leadership and partner teams (engineering, planning, logistics, safety, quality).

  • Drive a strong safety culture; identify hazards, support incident investigations, and implement corrective actions.

  • Organize and conduct root cause investigations for quality excursions that occur on your shift

  • Identify and implement continuous improvements to increase safety, quality, efficiency, and repeatability.

  • Maintain clean, organized, compliant work areas (e.g., 5S, "clean as you go," tool/FOD control).

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 3+ years of handson experience in manufacturing operations, test operations, assembly operations, machine shop, or a closely related operational environment.

  • 1+ year of frontline leadership (supervisor, lead, crew chief, or equivalent) directing technicians, machinists or operators.

  • Experience performing work on complex or hazardous systems (e.g., cryogenic, pneumatic, hydraulic, highpressure, highvoltage, propellants, or similar).

  • Ability to read and follow technical documentation (procedures, work instructions, drawings, schematics, manuals).

  • Proven ability to plan and prioritize daily work for a team while meeting safety, quality, and schedule commitments.

  • Strong proficiency with digital tools (email, spreadsheets, MES, maintenance/operations systems) and ability to learn new tools quickly.

  • Willing and able to support nonstandard hours (nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime), work in field/industrial environments (outdoors, PPE, heights/ladders, hazardous or restricted areas as required), and travel occasionally to other Blue Origin sites or test/launch locations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional experience: 5+ years of relevant operations experience (e.g., aerospace, launch vehicles, test facilities, industrial automation/controls, oil & gas, or similar), including 2+ years as a frontline supervisor/lead

  • Proficiency interpreting engineering drawings, models, specifications, and test procedures.

  • Experience with Lean/continuous improvement (e.g., 5S, Kaizen) and implementing process and safety improvements.

  • Experience with fabrication, assembly, integration, and test of valves or ignition systems

  • Formal technical training, certifications, or an associate degree in a relevant field
