Job summary

Central Steel & Wire seeks an Area Lead for the 3rd shift in University Park, IL. You will oversee the warehouse team and assist the third shift Supervisor with production and department goals, ensuring safe, efficient operations during 11pm–7:30am.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of leadership experience, is hands-on with material handling equipment, and is eager to learn SAP. You will mentor staff, run pre-shift huddles, and address equipment issues to maintain continuous flow.

Qualifications

• Skills-based assessment covering reading, math, inspections, and problem-solving.
• 3–5 years of experience in a similar role.
• Experience operating equipment in a service center.
• Strong leadership with good interpersonal communication.
• Willingness to learn SAP and work with it.
• Physical ability to pass vision, hearing, and mobility tests.

Responsibilities

• Operate motorized material handling equipment (crane, side loader, forklift).
• Fill in when short-handed during high-demand periods.
• Train staff and mentor teammates.
• Lead pre-shift safety and production huddles.
• Coordinate repairs or arrange for outside service as needed.

As an Area Lead with Central Steel & Wire, you will oversee the warehouse team and assist the third shift Supervisor with production and department goals.

This position is third shift. The hours for this position are through Monday through Friday from 11pm to 7:30am.

Roles and Responsibilities

• The ideal candidate will operate motorized material handling equipment such as an overhead crane, side loader, and forklift
• It is also a requirement that when short-handed or during periods of high demand, Leadership is responsible for filling in where needed
• Responsible for training staff to ensure they are fully trained for the tasks they are performing. Coaches, mentors, counsels, and develops
• Effectively leads pre-shift safety and production huddles with the team
• Ensure corrective actions are carried out to eliminate workplace hazards
• Reacts to machinery breakdowns by directing repairs when possible, arranging for outside repairs or reassignment of personnel as needed
• Assume short-term responsibility for management absences as requested

Requirements

• Successfully pass a skills-based assessment - evaluates your reading, math, inspections & measurement, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills
• 3-5 years of experience
• Experience operating equipment and ability to recognize materials in the service center
• Possesses leadership abilities and has a desire to advance and solid interpersonal communication skills required
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment
• Flexible, dependable, and solutions-oriented
• The successful candidate is expected to develop proficiency in SAP as part of their role. Prior experience is not required, but a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and become proficient in SAP is essential.
• Physical ability to pass physical requirements exam for vision, hearing, and mobility

Salary: $29.09 - $30.40 per hour. A starting rate higher than $29.09 per hour is based on a level of experience and education that significantly exceeds the minimum requirements and is commensurate with the compensation scale.
