Job Description

Special Education Teacher, Comprehensive Life Skills Classroom

1. Must hold the proper certification and endorsements as required by the State Board of Education. Qualifying License: Special K-12. Qualifying Endorsement: Generalist.
2. Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Trustees may find appropriate and acceptable.
3. Reports to Principal.
4. Candidates must have a commitment to life‑long learning and a willingness to actively participate in professional development and enhancing individual skill sets.
5. Staff must be solution‑focused, work effectively with colleagues, and have the aptitude for gathering data and analyzing that data to improve their effectiveness as a teacher. All new hires must have a capacity and a commitment to using and fostering technology.
6. Must have an unwavering commitment to the success of all students, as well as a dedication to meeting the differentiated needs of student groups, including special education, English Language Learners, and gifted students.
7. Strives to implement the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives, establishes clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects, and communicates these objectives to students.
8. Preferred experience developing support systems using assistive technology, coordinating related services and accessing community supports, teaching a self‑contained special education classroom, training in CPI or similar de‑escalation techniques, developing behavioral plans; able to plan curriculum, create lessons, and model best practice teaching methods; manage paraprofessional support; deliver core curriculum; lift at least 75 pounds; assist with toileting; administer Nevada Alternative Assessment.
9. Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs and abilities of students.
10. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation as requested by the immediate supervisor.
11. Identifies students with learning problems on a regular basis and seeks assistance from District specialists.
12. Assists the administration in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policy; develops classroom behavior rules and procedures; maintains order in the classroom fairly and justly.
13. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records and inventories as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulation.
14. Takes necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
15. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and parents concerning academic and behavioral progress.
16. Provides availability to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day as required or requested under reasonable terms.
17. Attends and participates in faculty meetings.
18. Cooperates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
19. Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
20. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with others.
21. Accepts a share of responsibility for co‑curricular activities if requested.
22. Provides for personal professional growth through ongoing reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
23. Performs other tasks and assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
