Job summary

Kern County Sheriff's Office invites eligible employees to participate in a Department Promotional Examination for the position of Sheriff’s Detentions Sergeant. The process includes an evening and night shift pay structure and a 12-month eligible list will be established from the examination results.

Applicants must have one year of prior detention deputy experience, a valid PC 832 firearms certificate, and a valid Class C California driver’s license.

• Possession of a valid PC 832 firearms certificate.
• Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver's license is required at time of appointment. Specialized licenses required for some assignments.

Job description

This is a Department Promotional Examination and is open to eligible employees of the Sheriff's Office.

Shift pay: 5% additional pay for evening shift work; 7 ½ % additional pay for night shift work. Applicants must be willing to work any shift of a 24-hour period and any 5 of 7 days.

Examinations:

Written Exam (Weight 100%):May include knowledge of supervision and training techniques; reading and analyzing information; writing and reviewing reports; scheduling and record keeping.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written exam.

Examination components for promotional testing will be administered during the scheduled date(s)/time(s)/location without exception.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish a 12-month eligible list from which appointments will be made at the Kern County Sheriff's Office as needed.

This is a Department Promotional Examination and is open to eligible employees of the Kern County Sheriff's Office who have successfully completed their initial probationary period and received an overall rating of standard or better on the last employee performance report.
