Job description

Job Description

Women’s Animal Center, a nonprofit animal shelter located in Bensalem, Bucks County, just outside Philadelphia, is seeking a compassionate and skilled Shelter Veterinarian to join our team. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on animal welfare through a primary focus on shelter medicine and surgery. The Center also operates an AAHA accredited veterinary hospital, and this position will also provide outpatient veterinary services to pets in our community.

Experience in shelter medicine and surgery is preferred; mentoring is available for new graduates.

The Shelter Veterinarian plays a vital role in maintaining the health and well-being of animals in our shelter, providing medical evaluations, diagnostics, treatment, and surgical care throughout their time with us. Responsibilities include performing shelter rounds, assessing newly admitted animals, managing medical conditions, performing spay/neuter and other necessary surgical procedures, and collaborating with shelter and medical staff to develop appropriate treatment plans. This position also works closely with our shelter and behavior teams to support positive outcomes for animals in our care and help prepare them for successful adoption.

Women’s Animal Center is a full-service veterinary practice and animal shelter equipped with digital radiography, a multi-table surgical suite, Aesculight laser surgery, state-of-the-art in-house diagnostic equipment, six spacious exam rooms, and an experienced support team.

In addition to shelter responsibilities, the Shelter Veterinarian will maintain an outpatient caseload, providing preventive care, sick visits, diagnostics, and treatment for animals in foster care and family-owned pets in the community. Our veterinary team works collaboratively to manage medical and surgical cases, balancing the needs of shelter animals with scheduled outpatient appointments. This integrated approach allows our veterinarians to practice high-quality medicine while directly supporting our mission of improving the lives of animals.

Women’s Animal Center offers a rewarding opportunity for a veterinarian who is passionate about animal welfare, enjoys surgery, and values the variety of practicing both shelter and general veterinary medicine in a mission-driven, nonprofit environment.

The ideal candidate is dedicated, caring, and compassionate, with excellent clinical judgment, strong diagnostic and surgical skills, and a collaborative approach to patient care. Candidates must demonstrate effective communication, sound medical decision-making, and a commitment to teamwork, client education, and high standards of veterinary medicine. The ability to manage a diverse caseload, adapt to the changing needs of a shelter environment, and work closely with veterinarians, technicians, shelter personnel, and support staff is essential.

Candidates must have a VMD or DVM degree from an accredited institution and be eligible for licensure in Pennsylvania. A current license in good standing is required.

Women’s Animal Center offers reimbursement for continuing education, uniforms, and licensure. We also provide a competitive benefits package, including health insurance, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 401(k), paid time off, and employee discounts. As a nonprofit organization, employment with Women’s Animal Center may qualify for student loan forgiveness based on applicable federal student loan guidelines.
