Job summary

Vertical Mechanical Group Inc. is seeking a hands-on Sheet Metal Leader for our construction sheet metal team at our Berryville, VA fabrication shop.

You will provide day-to-day leadership to field crews, coordinate with Superintendents and Foremen, and ensure safe, on-schedule installation of ductwork and related sheet metal systems. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of HVAC sheet metal experience, prior crew leadership, and strong reading of construction drawings.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of commercial HVAC sheet metal experience.
  • Experience leading sheet metal crews as Lead Mechanic/Foreman.
  • Experience managing 10–15 employees.
  • OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel between VMG project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership to sheet metal field personnel.
  • Coordinate with Superintendents and Foremen to establish daily and weekly work priorities.
  • Plan manpower, materials, tools, equipment, information, and access needed to maintain productivity.
  • Lead installation of commercial HVAC ductwork and related sheet metal systems.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, coordination drawings, and installation details.
  • Assist with field layout and ensure installations meet approved drawings and project requirements.
  • Monitor field productivity and identify issues affecting production, manpower, or schedules.
  • Communicate manpower needs, material shortages, design conflicts, and field concerns to project leadership.
  • Coordinate sheet metal activities with plumbing, piping, electrical, controls, and other trades to minimize conflicts.
  • Inspect work in progress to maintain quality and address deficiencies.
  • Promote accountability for productivity, attendance, workmanship, safety, and professional conduct.
  • Coach Foremen, Apprentices, and Helpers on techniques.
  • Participate in pre-task planning and toolbox talks.
  • Assist with manpower planning and allocation of field employees.
  • Support material planning and confirm required materials, tools, lifts, and equipment are available.
  • Identify opportunities to improve installation methods and project execution.
  • Represent VMG professionally with general contractors and project partners.

We brought these two respected companies together to provide our clients with award-winning expertise in HVAC and Plumbing for new construction, improvements, renovations, upfits, design-build, and installations in the commercial space.

As VMG continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Sheet Metal Leader to join our Construction Sheet Metal team at our fabrication shop in Berryville, Virginia and provide hands‑on leadership to our field crews.

The Opportunity

The Sheet Metal Leader is a hands‑on field leadership position responsible for helping drive the successful execution of commercial HVAC sheet metal projects. This individual will work closely with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and field personnel to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with project plans and VMG standards.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Sheet Metal Mechanic, Lead Mechanic, Foreman, or Trade Leader who is ready to take greater ownership of crew leadership, daily production, manpower coordination, material readiness, quality, and field communication while remaining actively involved in sheet metal installation.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and direction to sheet metal field personnel.
  • Coordinate with Superintendents and Foremen to establish daily and weekly work priorities.
  • Plan ahead to ensure crews have the manpower, materials, tools, equipment, information, and access needed to maintain productivity.
  • Lead and support the installation of commercial HVAC ductwork and associated sheet metal systems.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, coordination drawings, and installation details.
  • Assist with field layout and ensure installations meet approved drawings and project requirements.
  • Monitor field productivity and identify potential issues affecting production, manpower, or project schedules.
  • Communicate manpower needs, material shortages, design conflicts, and field concerns to project leadership.
  • Coordinate sheet metal activities with plumbing, piping, electrical, controls, and other trades to minimize conflicts and rework.
  • Inspect work in progress to maintain quality standards and ensure deficiencies are corrected.
  • Promote accountability for productivity, attendance, workmanship, safety, and professional conduct.
  • Coach and provide hands‑on technical guidance to Foremen, Mechanics, Apprentices, and Helpers.
  • Participate in pre-task planning, toolbox talks, and other required safety activities.
  • Assist with manpower planning and the effective allocation of field employees based on project needs and skill levels.
  • Support material planning and confirm required materials, tools, lifts, and equipment are available before work begins.
  • Identify opportunities to improve installation methods, productivity, workflow, and overall project execution.
  • Professionally represent VMG when working with General Contractors, customers, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and other project partners.
What We’re Looking For
  • 5+ years of commercial HVAC sheet metal experience preferred.
  • Previous experience leading sheet metal crews as a Lead Mechanic, Foreman, Trade Leader, or similar field leadership role strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing and providing day‑to‑day leadership to approximately 10‑15 employees preferred.
  • Experience with Stratus software preferred.
  • Experience with coil line production preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial ductwork installation, including rectangular, round, spiral, and specialty duct systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, shop drawings, specifications, and coordination drawings.
  • Strong understanding of field layout, elevations, dimensions, and installation requirements.
  • Ability to plan work, organize manpower, and maintain field productivity.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to quickly communicate field issues and solutions.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with Superintendents, Project Managers, General Contractors, and other trades.
  • Working knowledge of construction safety practices and OSHA requirements.
  • OSHA 10 required; OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel between VMG project sites within the region as business needs require.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements

This is an active, hands‑on field position performed in commercial construction environments. Candidates must be able to:

  • Regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, and work from ladders or lifts.
  • Lift and carry materials, tools, and equipment commonly associated with commercial sheet metal installation.
  • Work safely in both indoor and outdoor environments, including varying temperatures and changing jobsite conditions.
  • Work in hot and cold weather conditions when projects require outdoor work.
  • Safely use all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
