Job summary

Ultipro is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to safely operate an excavator with a shear attachment for sizing scrap metal for steel mills. The role is outdoor and unionized, with typical hours 7:30 am–4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, and occasional Saturdays; overtime may be required.

Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED, and prefer 1 year of excavator operation with a shear attachment in metal recycling or construction. Drug test and background check apply.

Job description

We are looking for a hard-working, reliable and safety minded individual to join our team as a Heavy Equipment Operator. The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for the safe and efficient operations of an excavator with a shear attachment in the preparation of (cutting) scrap metal to sizes that are acceptable by the steel mill.

This position will work outside in varying weather conditions.

This is a Union position, and the working hours are usually 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday hours. Overtime scheduled as needed.

Responsibilities of a Shear Operator

• Operate an excavator with a shear attachment to cut scrap metal and debris in preparation for processing.
• Conduct constant inspection and surveillance of surroundings before and during operations of the shear to prevent dangerous situations.
• Inspects materials to be sheared and verifies that the processing can be carried out within the safe operating parameters of the equipment.
• Manipulate shear attachment according to written, verbal or signal instructions within safe operational parameters.
• Perform daily inspections of equipment and work site and report any concerns, defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
• Observe shear operations to detect malfunctions and to notify maintenance.
• Load material into chamber for crushing and pushing into cutter.
• Load and unload items from machines, conveyors and conveyances.
• Clean equipment/clean work area at the end of shift.
• Keep work areas neat and orderly.
• Regular attendance and punctuality are essential job functions.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
• Comply with all applicable federal, state, local, & SA Recycling safety, health, & environmental rules, regulations, policies, & procedures.

Qualifications:

• High School diploma, GED Certification, or equivalent work experience.
• 1-year excavator operations with the use of a shear attachment in the scrap metal or related construction industries preferred.
• Ability to carry out instructions provided in written or oral form.
• Ability to learn new tasks as assigned required.
• Ability to communicate with others effectively; understand direction (written or oral) and use basic math skills as the job demands.
• Must pass a medical physical/drug test and background check
