Job summary

Helena Industries is seeking a Safety, Health and Environmental Technician to perform hands-on tasks impacting plant safety and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities include equipment inspections, environmental monitoring, waste disposal coordination, and training of staff to ensure regulatory compliance and safe operations at the Des Moines facility.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment required.
  • 2 years in environmental and safety position with knowledge of chemical waste disposal required.

  • Inspect plant equipment, buildings and grounds regularly, including fire extinguishers and safety equipment.
  • Monitor environmental monitoring equipment and conduct environmental sampling.
  • Coordinate waste disposal shipments and labeling for plant warehousing or disposal.
  • Complete paperwork for waste disposal invoicing and verify vendor invoices.
  • Train team members in housekeeping, safety and waste policies and procedures.
  • Audit facility safety and environmental practices and communicate findings to leadership.

This position is with Helena Industries (HI). HI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Helena Agri-Enterprises, LLC and provides production and distribution solutions to customers across a wide variety of industries. HI is one of the largest chemical toll manufacturers in the U.S. and our clients include many household name brands and large retailers.

ABOUT THE JOB

The Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Technician is responsible for performing hands-on tasks associated with the ways the plant impacts the surrounding environment including waste handling and security of plant buildings and grounds to provide a safe, clean and secure workplace for all employees. This position is also responsible for performing duties associated with dispensing safety equipment and working in a safe, responsible manner following all safety rules and procedures and applicable laws and regulations.

WHAT YOUR DAY WILL LOOK LIKE
  • Checks and inspects the plant equipment, buildings and grounds on a regular basis including inspection of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, safety showers and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBAs) on a monthly basis.
  • Monitors and inspects all environmental monitoring equipment.
  • Performs environmental (air, water, noise) sampling/monitoring.
  • Ensures that all contract team members involved with waste disposal are in compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinates the movement and shipping of waste inventory.
  • Schedules shipments for waste disposal, including proper labeling of waste inventory for plant warehousing, shipping or disposal.
  • Completes required paperwork for the accounting team to bill customers for waste disposal fees.
  • Verifies waste disposal vendor invoices and sends them to leadership for approval.
  • Tracks waste materials so that shipments can be bundled together for cost efficiencies.
  • Reports waste trends to senior leadership.
  • Conducts light maintenance, repairs and or replacements as needed.
  • Completes and understands hazardous waste training for the purpose of independent handling of waste disposal that is in compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and updates SHE policies and procedures.
  • Assists in conducting SHE training for plant team members.
  • Audits facility safety and environmental practices and performance to identify any deficiencies.
  • Ensures all employees are safe and in compliance with all applicable regulations. Communicates audit findings to facility leadership.
  • Completes requisitions for purchases of safety, housekeeping or waste supply items in Oracle.
  • Trains new or assigned team members in housekeeping, security and waste policies and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean work environment both inside and outside the facility by using good housekeeping habits.
  • May be required to drive a company vehicle.
  • Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned by your leader.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Follows all company policies and procedures.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Two years of experience in a manufacturing environment is required.
  • Two years of experience in an environmental and safety position with knowledge of chemical waste disposal is required.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and knowledge of Oracle is preferred. .
  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Ability to pass an OSHA respirator physical.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time in extreme hot or cold temperatures.
  • Available to work a rotating shifts.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license is required and must meet all company requirements to drive a Helena vehicle.
  • Applicants for positions requiring operation of a moving vehicle or interaction with heavy equipment must meet the legal age requirement.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English is required.
  • Communicating in Spanish is a valuable skill at Helena.
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office are required.

Successful completion of a drug test and background check is required for all positions at Helena.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB

At Helena, safety is our highest priority. We seek out extensive safety measures and put them in place to minimize exposure to anything that could be potentially harmful to our employees.

The work environment for this position will be an office setting and in a typical plant environment where the noise level is usually moderate to loud. In this position, you will regularly work near moving equipment/mechanical parts and could be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, chemical and biological hazards, vibrations and a risk of electrical shock.

This position requires you to use your hands for many different tasks and to talk, hear, walk, sit, stand,(8 hours a day or more), lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling (up to and including 50lbs or more), reaching overhead (up to and including 25lbs), climbing, gripping, grasping and twisting using hands and wrists, bending and stooping for long periods of time, working below knee levels for short periods of time and working above shoulder level for short periods.
