Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Las Vegas, NV, seeks a Sewing Machine Operator within the Environmental Management Service. The role involves sewing, hemming and repairing uniforms to maintain clean, serviceable items; alterations that preserve original fit; and assisting with laundry and linen operations.

You will work Monday to Friday, 7:30am–4:00pm, with rotation weekends and holidays. The position falls under the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, with duties aligned to uniform

Qualifications

• Experience sewing, hemming and repairing uniforms to keep items clean and in good condition.
• Ability to alter uniforms without changing basic cut or fit of item.
• Assist Laundry staff with movement and washing of linen and data collection for reports.

Responsibilities

• Perform sewing, hemming, and repair of uniforms; align and position material and mend items with topstitching on pockets, linens and textiles.
• Make alterations to uniform apparel without changing basic cut or fit; support Laundry Supervisor in program compliance.
• Inventory specialty items, monitor par levels, collaborate with ScrubEx and AlEx machine users; assist with linen movement and washing.

This position is under the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS), Environmental Management Service (EMS) and is responsible for the program oversight and management of uniform issuance, distribution and inventory, specialty textile items, and facility issued scrubs.

Key Responsibilities

Major duties include: Performs a full range of duties related to sewing, hemming, and repairing of uniforms to ensure that all items are clean and in satisfactory condition. Performs sewing activities involving alinements and positioning of material or mending of utility organization items of irregular shapes such as those found on pockets, hospital linens and textiles, which involve topstitching of square corners, or curved edges.

Makes alterations in uniform apparel which do not involve changing basic cut or fit of item. Supports the Laundry Supervisor with maintaining compliance of the uniform program. Collects and maintain statistical data as necessary for the preparation of reports and analysis. Work collaboratively with services utilizing ScrubEx and AlEx Machine. Specialty items are properly inventoried and monitored to ensure correct par levels are maintained for facility use.
