Job summary

Rolls-Royce is hiring a Service Technician for Charleston, SC. The role focuses on independent service, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of MTU engines and propulsion systems at customer sites across North America and internationally.

You will manage job planning, vendor coordination, and technical execution end-to-end, mentoring junior personnel and contributing to service documentation in a high-travel, demanding environment.

Qualifications

• 2 years mechanical or technical trade school with 3+ years of field service experience on large diesel engines or related field.
• In lieu of degree, 5+ years of field service experience with mechanical or electrical troubleshooting on large diesel engines or related field.
• U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency; ability to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Position Summary

The Service Technician is an experienced field technician responsible for the independent service, troubleshooting, repair, and overhaul of mtu engines, propulsion systems, and electronic controls at customer sites across North America and internationally. At this level, the technician is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, managing job planning, vendor coordination, and technical execution end-to-end, while also mentoring junior service personnel and contributing to product development and service documentation. This is a high-travel, technically demanding role for a seasoned professional who takes pride in delivering world-class service in challenging marine and industrial environments.

What you will be doing

• Travel domestically and internationally 70–100% of the time, often on short notice, this is a field-based role with the majority of time spent at customer sites.
• Lead field service execution, service, troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul mtu engines, propulsion systems, and electronic controls; inspect parts for conformance to specification; instrument propulsion systems; record test data; and commission and operate engines and propulsion systems on-site.
• Own the full job lifecycle, maintain active project timelines, prioritize tasks, prepare work estimates, request parts and tools, source local vendors in coordination with Purchasing, and keep accurate engine, vessel, and equipment logbooks and daily activity records.
• Investigate field failures and improve product quality, perform field inspections of failed parts, write technical reports to prevent future incidents, and collaborate with product groups on design development and updates to service manuals and bulletins.
• Develop customers and junior colleagues, instruct customers in safe engine operation, shutdown procedures, and troubleshooting; mentor and provide technical assistance to junior service personnel; and maintain the technical currency needed to stay ahead of evolving systems.

Basic Requirements

• 2 years mechanical or technical trade school with 3+ years of experience in field service with mechanical or electrical troubleshooting experience on large diesel engines or a related field.
• In lieu of degree, 5+ years of experience in field service with mechanical or electrical troubleshooting experience on large diesel engines or a related field.
• In order to be eligible for consideration, you must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident. Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without sponsorship. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.

Preferred Requirements

• Strong hands-on expertise in diesel marine engine testing, troubleshooting, and overhaul — including deep knowledge of internal combustion engine operation, electronic engine controls, instrumentation, electronics, physics, hydraulics, and pneumatics, combined with the physical properties of fuels, coolants, lubricants, and oils.
• Proficiency with mechanical and electrical hand tools, precision measurement instruments (dial gauges, bore gauges, micrometers), machine shop equipment for fabricating and testing parts, and the ability to work safely within the tight confines of marine engine compartments for extended periods; experience operating forklifts and rigging loads up to 1 ton is a plus.
• Experience with mtu engines and electronics, or comparable large diesel power systems, combined with CAD software proficiency and strong technical language and engineering terminology skills, including experience writing detailed field inspection reports, service letters, and service manual updates.
• Demonstrated ability to represent Rolls-Royce Power Systems professionally in customer-facing environments, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills for complex technical issues and the organizational discipline to manage multiple job tasks, timelines, and documentation requirements simultaneously.

Mental & Physical Requirements:

• Physical ability to lift, push, and pull weights in the 20–60 lbs range
• Ability to work at heights, climb ladders, and enter confined spaces as required by field service tasks.
