Job summary

Golten Service Co Inc. seeks a Service Supervisor to lead a technical team performing maintenance, overhaul, and repair of 2- and 4-stroke diesel engines in field and shop environments.

You will direct a service team, ensure safety compliance, maintain high service quality, and manage customer relations on projects often requiring extensive travel across North America.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or similar engineering discipline strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ field service experience on RICE, diesel or heavy fuel engines, or related systems.
  • Experience with OEMs such as MAK, Daihatsu, Hyundai, Fairbanks Morse, Wartsila, MAN, STX, MTU is a plus.

Job description

General Description:

The Service Supervisor is a technical and team leadership position responsible for the maintenance, overhaul, repair, and troubleshooting of 2- and 4-stroke diesel engines and associated equipment, such as oil and fuel pumps, fuel injectors or nozzles and turbochargers or blowers. This role directs a service team in both field and shop environments, operating under limited supervision, independently, or as part of a larger project team. Responsibilities include leading and executing complex technical tasks, ensuring high-quality service delivery, and managing customer relations both internally and externally. The supervisor is expected to maintain high standards of safety and efficiency, guiding the team through technical challenges and ensuring compliance with all organizational and regulatory requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Guide service team during field and shop activities for accurate task completion.
  • Assist in assessing safety hazards and Job Safety Analysis (JSA) documentation.
  • Support in leading safety briefings.
  • Facilitate coordination with customers and service teams during operations.
  • Help assign tasks to team members based on project needs.
  • Relay team performance to management and senior engineers.
Responsibilities:
  1. Lead and support a service team engaged in 2- and 4-stroke engine service activities, including rigging, cleaning, inspections, measurements, calibration, and mechanical assembly. Act as the lead or shift lead within a larger team, directing and prioritizing efforts to meet project objectives.
  2. Conduct pre-job safety meetings, ensuring adherence to all company and customer safety requirements. Regularly inspect work areas and equipment, provide safety training, and deliver tool-box safety talks and shift handover notes, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety in all operations.
  3. Provide exceptional customer service by maintaining open and effective communication with customers, lead service engineers, and service managers or coordinators. Ensure professionalism, integrity, and accountability in all interactions.
  4. Execute and oversee the repair and overhaul of key engine components such as cylinder heads and liners. Ensure components are properly cleaned and calibrated as required.
  5. Review and interpret technical specifications such as manufacturers’ manuals, work instructions, and work orders to plan tooling requirements for upcoming work. Prepare parts and materials lists, establish efficient work sequences, and assign schedules and tasks to crews.
  6. Record fine metric measurements such as outer diameters, inner diameters, thickness, depth, ovality, taper, and wear using tools like calipers and hardness testers. Validate calibration and verify the completeness of all measurements and tooling, ensuring accurate documentation for service reports.
  7. Complete all necessary paperwork, including daily time sheets, expense reports, service reports, and measurement sheets. Ensure data completeness and accuracy for technical service report documentation, maintaining accountability and transparency.
  8. Direct the repair and overhaul of critical engine components, such as cylinder liners and cylinder heads. Perform skilled repair and maintenance operations using various tools, ensuring high-quality standards in all service activities.
  9. Use independent judgment and reasoning to maintain the highest levels of quality and service delivery. Adapt to changing circumstances and resolve challenges with professional discretion, preparing for progression to a higher-level technical role.
  10. Perform additional duties as required by local management.
Knowledge, Education, & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or similar engineering discipline strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience performing field service activities on one or more of the following: (1) Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines (RICE); (2) Diesel or heavy fuel engines – gas and or duel fuel systems; (3) Fuel oil or gas injection systems – engines auxiliary systems (separators, radiator, fuel, and air systems).
  • Prior work experience with one or more of the following OEMs; MAK, Daihatsu, Hyundai, Fairbanks Morse, Wartsila, MAN, STX, MTU are a plus.
Required Skills, & Abilities
  • Strong safety and quality control skills.
  • Working conditions often involve solo and team activities, necessating both independent work and collaboration. Therefore, good leadership and collaboration skills are a must.
  • Work environment may involve exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, and coolants; must possess the ability to select, properly use and maintain personal protective equipment for prolonged periods up to the full shift
  • Must possess the ability to work in the following environments: inside, outside, extreme heat or cold, cramped or tight places, at height, and over-the-water.

  • High degree of travel, often exceeding 80% of the time. The need for flexibility in response to changing schedules and locations is paramount.
Conditions of Employment; General –

Conditions of Employment; Physical Requirements –

All production and service delivery personnel, including diesel engine technicians, governor technicians, I&E technicians, machinists, and welder/mechanics are required to meet and maintain the following physical requirements:

  • Good vision (close, distance, depth) and color perception (red, green, amber) to accurately work on complex diesel engine systems and identify wiring and safety signals. Use of corrective lenses or contacts are permitted to meet requirement.
  • Effective hearing/listening and clear speech are essential for communicating with team members and ensuring safety in noisy environments. Use of medical devices, e.g., hearing aids, are permitted to meet requirements.
  • High manual dexterity and fine motor skills are necessary for safe and precise operations, adjustments, and maintenance tasks.
  • Personnel must be capable of mounting and dismounting vehicles such as forklifts and trucks as necessary. The ability to push, pull, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in confined spaces is required for accessing and repairing machinery components.
  • All product and service delivery roles demand physical strength to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds multiple times per shift.
  • Requires the ability to drive locally or over long distances, and/or travel by plane, helicopter, or watercraft as needed to perform job duties. Additionally, positions require the capacity to bend, squat, sit, and stand for prolonged periods, and maintain balance when climbing on machinery parts or structures.
