Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a supervisor to oversee security personnel and inmate management within a unit, under the guidance of the shift lieutenant. The role includes evaluating staff, counseling, and ensuring safety and OSHA standards are met.

Responsibilities span conducting unannounced inspections, leading training sessions, performing routine checks, and mediating misconduct at the lowest level. Completion of eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training is required upon hire.

Qualifications

• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete basic supervisory course within six months.

• Assist with the preparation of employee evaluations, corrective actions, counseling, etc.
• Make unannounced inspections of the unit to ensure that subordinate security are performing duties properly.
• Responsible for briefings and training of all security personnel assigned to the unit.
• Make routine scheduled and unscheduled inspections of the unit, security devices and gates for cleanliness, serviceability and accountability, and ensure that the unit meets all safety and OSHA standards.
• Conducts investigations of alleged misconduct and will mediate to resolve at lowest level.
• Assists in conducting all counts and makes written reports as needed and/or required.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.

SCDC Minimum Requirements

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
