Job summary

Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a Senior Writer/Editor to manage content across blogs, the SEI website, reports, and presentations. You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, and subject-matter experts through all stages of the writing process, from inception to completion.

You will edit and tailor material for various formats, ensuring adherence to style guides and quality standards, while coordinating with Design, Web Services, PR, and Outreach

Qualifications

  • Five+ years of experience in writing and editing.
  • Excellent document planning and editing skills; attention to style guides.
  • Strong customer service focus for subject-matter experts and readers.
  • Keen eye for detail and commitment to quality.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Ability to interview SMEs and collaborate to develop written materials.
  • Experience with Word and PowerPoint; ability to work with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with technical staff to write blog posts on technical topics.
  • Write technical news and feature articles for SEI channels.
  • Create and edit web content, scripts, and other media materials.
  • Edit formal technical reports with varying levels of editing needs.
  • Write and edit brief articles and marketing materials.
  • Coordinate with Communications Design, Web Services, PR, and Outreach teams on publications and materials.
  • Plan, manage, schedule, and track project tasks.

We’relooking for a SeniorWriter/Editorto join ourStrategicCommunicationsand Mediateamat the Software Engineering Institute (SEI)tomanage content forblogs, the SEI website,blogs,reports,news stories,and presentations.You willcollaboratewith SEIresearchers, engineers, and othersubject-matter expertsthroughall stages of the writing process frominceptionto completion.

What you’d do
  • Collaborate with technical staffto writeblog postsabouttechnical topics.

  • Write technical news and feature articles for the SEI website, Year in Review, and other communication channels.

  • Write and editweb content, video scripts,andcontent forother electronic media.

  • Editformaltechnicalreports.Tailoryourwork for each project—from substantive editing,tocopyediting,toproofreading—depending on project requirements, schedule, and budget.

  • Writeand editbriefarticles and marketing materials.

  • Work withSEICommunication Design, Web Services, Public Relations, and Outreachteamson publications, presentations, web pages,information graphics,and event materials.

  • Plan, manage, schedule, and trackyourprojecttasks.

Who you are
  • You haveat leastfiveyears of experienceinwritingand editing.

  • You have excellent document planning, writing, substantive editing, and copyediting skills.

  • You are committed to customer serviceforsubject-matter experts, but you are alsoa strong advocate for theirreaders.

  • You have a keen eye for detail and a strong focus on qualityand adherence toa style guide.

  • You have strong organizational, time management, and project management skills and can prioritize multipleresponsibilities.

  • You have the social skills tointerview subject-matter experts orwork closely withthemto plan and develop writtentechnicalmaterials.

  • You havesignificantexperiencewith Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and PowerPoint.

  • You can work with minimal or no supervision, but youalsoparticipatein team decision making.

  • Youwill be subject to a background investigation.

You might also have experience in
  • an academic or technical research setting

  • marketing writing for a technical or DoD audience

  • coordinating with others to meet service-level agreements for projects
