Job summary

The City of Naperville's Water Utility is seeking a Senior Water Utility Technician in their Water Supply section to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation, inspection, sanitation, maintenance, and/or repair of the City’s water supply. This non-supervisory position is represented by the IBEW Local 196 union.

Wage rates and benefits are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The role includes monitoring, repairs, record-keeping, and site visits to waterworks and storage

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of responsible experience in operation/maintenance of a water supply facility or related environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • IEPA Class C Certificate of Competency or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
  • Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor water supply system (pumping, pressures, flows, storage levels, chlorination).
  • Plan and perform mechanical/electrical repair on water supply equipment and controls (pumps, PLCs, PRVs, feeders, generators).
  • Operate and maintain pumps, control panels, PLCs, chlorination systems, and related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate daily records of operations, usage, storage, and chemical feeds.
  • Install/modify water supply facilities; maintain records and inventory.
  • Ensure safety practices and report unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Prepare progress and monthly regulatory reports.
  • Travel to tanks, stations, and wells to perform duties; transport chemicals as needed.
  • Maintain buildings and grounds around facilities and reservoirs; support training of staff.

Job description

The City of Naperville’s Water Utility is currently seeking a Senior Water Utility Technician in their Water Supply section to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation, inspection, sanitation, maintenance, and/or repair of the City’s water supply.


This position is represented by the IBEW Local 196 union. Wage rates and other benefits are subject to the language in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

  • Monitors water supply system to ensure proper pumping and system pressures, water flows, storage tank levels, and chlorination feed rates.
  • Plans and performs mechanical and electrical repair work on a variety of water supply and treatment equipment and instrument controls such as large capacity pumps, deep-well pumping equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), pressure reducing/regulating valves (PRVs), chemical feeders, flow recorders, emergency power generators, electric motors, and other water treatment equipment.
  • Operates and maintains large capacity pumps, deep-well pumping equipment, control panels, PLCs, PRV’s, gas and liquid chlorination systems, chemical feeders, emergency power generators, electric motors, and other water treatment equipment.
  • Maintains accurate daily records for waterworks operations, equipment, water usage, water storage tank levels, and treatment chemical feed rates.
  • Installs electrical/mechanical additions and/or modifications to water supply facilities. Maintains operating, maintenance, and inventory records.
  • Monitors work zones for unsafe conditions and takes corrective action when warranted. Reports such conditions to supervisor as appropriate. Adheres, at all times, to proper safety-related policies and practices. Practices safety procedures in the performance of all job duties.
  • Prepares work progress reports and assists in the preparation of monthly reports for regulatory agencies.
  • Drives to various elevated storage tanks, waterworks, and reservoir/booster pump station facilities, emergency standby well sites, and other locations as required on a daily basis to execute various operational functions.
  • Transports chlorine gas and other water treatment chemicals as needed to various facilities throughout the City.
  • Maintains buildings and grounds around well sites, pump stations, and storage facilities. Maintains ground storage reservoirs, elevated storage tanks, and other structures.
  • May train subordinate and temporary employees in maintenance techniques.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required
  • At least three years of responsible experience in the operation and/or maintenance of an advanced wastewater treatment facility, water supply facility, or related environment.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid IEPA Class C Certificate of Competency as a Public Water Supply Operator or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment.
  • A valid State of Illinois driver’s license.
Preferred
  • Formal education beyond the twelfth grade. Additional training in water treatment, wastewater treatment, mechanical maintenance, or a related field.
