Job description

Position Overview

The Senior Water Quality Control Systems Technician is a leadworker class that maintains and repairs pneumatic, chemical, electrical, and electronic components, analog and digital networks and systems, analysis equipment, computer control equipment—including computers and peripherals—and telemetry equipment used in process instrumentation and control systems.

Knowledge and Abilities
  • Electrical and electronic theory and practice as applied to process instrumentation and control equipment
  • Analog and digital system fault diagnostic techniques and procedures
  • Principles of chemistry and physics
  • The architecture, maintenance and operation of digital computer systems
  • The operation of telemetry systems
  • Materials, methods, and equipment used in the inspection, testing, calibration, maintenance, and repair of process instrumentation and control equipment
  • The principles of preventative maintenance
  • The principles of proper maintenance documentation
  • Safety practices necessary for the work
  • Direct the work of subordinate technicians
  • Read and interpret plans, schematics, process control flow diagrams, system/network drawing, detail drawings and wiring diagrams
  • Perform complex maintenance tasks involving analog and computer equipment
  • Perform some original circuit design work as required to implement minor analog and digital equipment modifications
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Prepare maintenance service reports
  • Prepare new and/or modified equipment operating and maintenance procedures
  • Read, write and speak the English language at a level required for successful job performance
  • Respond to emergency calls
  • Work day, swing, or graveyard shifts
Employment Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of experience, education, or training listed below that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Typical paths include:

  • One year of full‑time experience in the class of Water Quality Control Systems Technician in Sacramento County service
  • An AA or AS technology degree in instrumentation, computers, or electronics, or 30 college‑level semester units in instrumentation, computers or electronics

And:

  • Three years of full‑time journey level experience in the maintenance of process instrumentation and control equipment, at least two years of which involved maintenance of computer equipment

Education Substitutions

Additional qualifying education may substitute for a maximum of one year of the general experience; three semester units equal one month of experience.

Special Requirements

Valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, required. Failure to maintain a valid license constitutes cause for termination.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work while standing on a ladder
  • Ability to work while standing on a platform elevated more than twenty feet above ground
  • Ability to lift 50‑pound objects
  • Ability to work outside under all weather conditions
  • Ability to work in heavy traffic
  • Ability to distinguish colors used in electric wiring color coding
Probationary Period

Six (6) months.
