The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in UX, UI, human‑centered design, accessibility, and design systems. This role partners with product managers, engineers, public health subject‑matter experts, and government stakeholders. The designer will also mentor peers through design critiques, facilitate workshops, and promote practical UX standards across project teams.

What You Will Do
  • Lead the end‑to‑end UX and product design process, from discovery through implementation, for enterprise and public health applications.
  • Plan and facilitate stakeholder interviews, user interviews, contextual inquiry, journey mapping, design‑thinking workshops, ideation sessions, and co‑creation workshops.
  • Translate complex public health workflows and business processes into clear, intuitive digital experiences.
  • Create personas, journey maps, information architecture, task flows, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high‑fidelity interface designs.
  • Develop and maintain a scalable design system based on the U.S. Web Design System or a comparable enterprise design system.
  • Create reusable Figma component libraries with documentation, usage guidance, specifications, and developer handoff details.
  • Partner with front‑end developers to maintain design fidelity and support successful implementation.
  • Conduct usability testing and turn qualitative and quantitative findings into practical design recommendations.
  • Promote accessible and inclusive design, including Section 508 and WCAG compliance.
  • Participate in design reviews, sprint reviews, progress updates, readouts, and stakeholder presentations.
  • Mentor junior designers through collaborative coaching, critiques, and knowledge sharing.
What We Expect of You
  • Bachelor's degree in human‑centered design, human‑computer interaction, UX/UI design, product design, interaction design, graphic design, information design, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in product design, UX design, UI design, human‑centered design, or a related field.
  • Current human‑centered design certification and a current UX certification from a recognized organization or training provider.
  • Certified ScrumMaster or equivalent Agile certification or training.
  • Formal training or demonstrated experience in Section 508 compliance and WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Expert proficiency with Figma for design, prototyping, component libraries, and developer handoff.
  • Demonstrated experience creating, documenting, and governing enterprise design systems using USWDS or a similar component‑based system.
  • Strong knowledge of responsive design, usability, interaction design, visual design, information architecture, and user research methods.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, presentation, and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
  • Experience working within Agile or Scrum software‑development teams.
  • Experience supporting public health, government, or healthcare technology initiatives, is a plus.
  • Understanding of state, tribal, local, and territorial public health operations and workflows, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with disease surveillance, infectious‑disease reporting, case management, epidemiology workflows, and public health modernization, is a plus.
  • Experience with public health surveillance platforms such as NBS, EpiTrax, or Maven, is a plus.
  • Experience supporting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or another federal public health agency, is a plus.
  • Familiarity with public health interoperability standards and data‑exchange initiatives, is a plus.
