Job description

Senior Underwriter – Surety Business Unit

Location: Alpharetta, GA or Charlotte, NC.

Responsibilities
  • Review submissions and financial requirements to determine acceptability of risk in accordance with guidelines and standards.
  • Analyze the financial stability, creditworthiness, and experience of applicants to determine likelihood of fulfilling obligations under a bond.
  • Examine financial statements, credit reports, and other relevant financial information for new and existing accounts to assess credit quality.
  • Understand pricing components, rating methodology, and use predictive modeling tools to price risk based on financial and competitive analysis.
  • Apply underwriting tools, disciplines, and strategies to ensure guidelines are followed.
  • Prepare and analyze information on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations to drive results.
  • Adhere to CAT guidelines and underwriting discipline to minimize exposure and appropriately price.
  • Manage the assigned portfolio to achieve gross written premium, profitability, rate, retention, product mix, new business, and portfolio management goals.
  • Prioritize time and resources to effectively manage and optimize producer performance.
  • Develop producer relationships to build pipeline, agency intelligence, and drive performance to meet and exceed results.
  • Implement distributor‑specific plans, monitor performance, and adjust plans to ensure a substantial pipeline for future profitable growth.
  • Manage effective relationship with clients to build trust, facilitate negotiation, and secure commitment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • AFSB preferred.
  • Minimum 3‑5 years of Surety underwriting experience.
  • Knowledge of Surety underwriting techniques and national/local filing regulations and guidelines.
  • Financial acumen and credit analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of underwriting processes, coverages, and tools for new and renewal business decisions.
  • Proven ability to build and grow a profitable book of business and pipeline.
  • Strong customer‑needs assessment, solution positioning, objection handling, and closing skills.
  • Willingness to travel overnight as needed for client and internal meetings.
