Job summary

Arch Insurance Group Inc. seeks a Senior Underwriter to develop broker relationships and act as a technical expert for Middle Market P&C accounts. This hybrid role is based in Charlotte, NC with travel to support broker and production needs.

You will underwrite new and renewal accounts, manage broker portfolios and collaborate with MMC, ARC, Claims and Operations to drive profitability and growth.

  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet targets.
  • Ensure binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception.
  • Develop relationships with brokers and agents within the territory for new business or renewals.
  • Acquire new business and retain existing business including broker negotiations.
  • Manage complex referrals from underwriters and re-underwrite where needed.
  • Coordinate with MMC, ARC, Claims and Operations to drive underwriting processes.
  • Travel to support broker relationships (minimum 20%).

Position Summary

The Senior Underwriter will develop and maintain strong relationships with brokers and serve as a specialized technical expert for Middle Market P&C Accounts. This will be a hybrid position in Charlotte, NC with a minimum of 20% travel for broker/production needs.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Manage assigned broker portfolio of accounts to achieve efficient returns of profitability and growth.
  • Underwrite new and renewal accounts to meet top and bottom line targets.
  • Ensure placing and binding of FAC Reinsurance prior to policy inception.
  • Proactively develop relationships with brokers and agents assigned within the territory to either pursue new business acquisition and/or large renewal retention.
  • Acquisition of new business and retention of existing business including client and broker negotiations.
  • Manage complex referrals from underwriters and spokes and re-underwrite complex business as appropriate.
  • Proactively drive involvement of functional areas in Underwriting process, including e.g. MMC, ARC, Claims, Operations.
  • Handle market facing broker relationships with ability to travel a minimum of 20%.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Risk Assessment and Management: Ability to assess risk inherent exposures and natural hazards relevant to MM P&C.
  • Pricing and Market Mgt: Analyze current performance against benchmarks applying how the market operates and functions, the business needs and customer needs.
  • Contract Drafting and Interpretation: Design, develop and implement consistent, robust wordings.
  • Policy Management: Robust understanding of policy administration life cycle, information collection, policy issuance, premium bookings, credit control, cancellation.
  • Influencing Skills: Ability to persuade and motivate others to act, without executive authority.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to effectively absorb information from various sources, then analyze, study or examine data in detail, and draw appropriate conclusions.
  • IT Skills (Office applications): Use general office application tools e.g. Power Point, Excel, Word.
Education and Experience
  • A minimum of 2+ years of Commercial Property & Casualty Underwriting experience. Middle Market experience is preferred.
  • Recognized established relationships with brokers at peer group level and within market.
  • Experience with General Liability, Umbrella, Commercial Auto, Commercial Property, and/or Workers Compensation.
  • Good understanding of legal and regulatory framework.
  • Undergraduate degree required. Economics, Finance, Insurance Management, or Business Administration is preferred.
  • Completion of professional insurance qualification (e.g. CPCU) is preferred, but not required.
