Job summary

Markel seeks an experienced underwriter to price and manage new business and renewals profitably within authority. The role focuses on E&O, EPL, ML and cyber for professional service firms, with leadership in client/broker meetings.

You will analyze exposures, negotiate terms with brokers, and mentor peers while contributing to portfolio-impact projects and staying current with industry developments.

Qualifications

• 5 years’ experience in professional liability; focus on E&O, EPL, ML and cyber preferred.
• Experience with industry policy forms and wordings.
• Desire to enhance Markel’s Bermuda professional liability presence and customer focus.
• Demonstrated ability to negotiate while building broker relationships.

Job description

The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Able to provide coaching to others.

Mandated Mandates

• Underwrite and service a portfolio which includes E&O, EPL, ML coverages for professional service firms (primarily law firms, accounting firms, and consulting firms) as well as cyber.
• Negotiate with brokers on program structure, premiums, retentions and terms and conditions.
• Understand and analyze the applicable exposures of insureds, including financial stability, risk management posture, and cyber hygiene.
• Analyze coverage and contract language based on industry accepted policy forms.
• Take lead role in client/underwriter meetings (in-person or remotely) to quantify and assess insurance risks and exposures.
• Maintain up-to-date familiarity with economic and legal events impacting the portfolio and the overall insurance industry.
• Meet outlined objectives related to quote/binder turnaround, policy issuance, renewal management, file maintenance and documentation.
• Cross-sell to existing customers through the promotion of the Company’s products and services.
• Participate on projects having an impact on the business and actively keep knowledge and skills up to date through courses and seminars where appropriate.

Mandatory Mandates

• 5 years’ experience in professional liability; a recent focus on E&O, EPL, ML and/or cyber product lines strongly preferred.
• Experience with industry accepted policy forms and working knowledge of applicable wordings.
• Bachelor’s degree in business or related field.
• Desire and ability to enhance Markel’s position in the Bermuda professional liability marketplace through external engagement and a strong customer service focus.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully negotiate while developing positive broker relationships.
• Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent problem solving/decision making abilities.
• Strong work ethic. Must be a team player and able to work independently as needed.
