Lines of business: GL+CPL (Combined General Liability and Contractors Pollution Liability) for artisan contractors, with potential expansion to additional lines over time

Position Summary

Comeryx is an AI-native excess and surplus lines MGA building a combined CPL and GL program for artisan contractors, distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers. This is not a conventional desk underwriting role. The person in this seat will underwrite referrals generated by Comeryx's AI underwriting system, ground truth submissions against the data the AI extracts from ACORD forms, supplemental applications, and third party sources, and provide structured feedback that directly improves the AI's underwriting logic. The role also touches renewals (beginning approximately one year after hire), endorsement processing, and broker interaction, though broker relationship ownership sits elsewhere in the organization.

This is a new seat at an early-stage company. The successful candidate should expect to wear multiple hats, work with ambiguity, and treat the AI tooling as a core part of the job rather than an add-on to traditional underwriting work.

Key Responsibilities

AI-Referral Underwriting and Ground Truthing

• Desk underwrite submissions referred by the AI system, using the data the AI has extracted from ACORD forms, supplemental applications, and third party data sources as the starting point for analysis.
• Ground truth all submissions during the current phase of the program, until Comeryx has established confidence in the AI's independent decisioning capability. This means reviewing outcomes regardless of the AI's confidence level, not only flagged exceptions.
• Provide structured feedback through Comeryx-built internal tools, documenting where the AI's extraction, risk assessment, or referral logic was correct or incorrect, in a format the underwriting and AI/ML teams can act on.
• Exercise underwriting judgment on artisan contractor risk within GL+CPL, applying knowledge of contractor class hazards to decisions the AI has flagged for human review.

New Business, Renewals, and Endorsements

• Underwrite new business submissions as the primary near-term focus.
• Take on renewal underwriting beginning approximately one year after hire, as the book matures.
• Process midterm policy endorsements as they arise.
• Handling of audits, cancellations, non-renewals, conditional renewals and other servicing requirements with knowledge and application of appropriate state surplus lines requirements.

Broker Interaction

• Interface directly with wholesale broker partners on submission questions, underwriting rationale, and program mechanics, without holding primary relationship ownership for any broker.
• Participate in occasional broker travel as needed; this is expected to be a small share of the role, not a core function.

Process and Product Improvement

• Surface patterns in AI referral behavior, submission quality, or broker-side data gaps to the underwriting and product teams.
• Contribute underwriting expertise to the ongoing refinement of Comeryx's risk appetite, referral thresholds, and AI training data as the program evolves.

Required Qualifications

• Active state Property & Casualty license and active surplus lines license, or the ability to obtain promptly.
• Demonstrated general liability underwriting experience. Excess and surplus lines experience specifically is preferred but not required; strong admitted-market GL underwriters comfortable operating with ambiguity are encouraged to apply.
• Genuine willingness and enthusiasm to learn and work daily inside AI-assisted underwriting tools. This is not a nice-to-have; the role is built around it.
• Comfort making underwriting decisions in a fast-moving, early-stage environment where process is still being defined, sometimes by the person doing the work.
• Strong written communication skills, given the volume of structured feedback the role requires.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior underwriting experience specifically within artisan contractor classes of business.
• Prior exposure to AI-assisted, data-driven, or automated underwriting platforms, though Comeryx recognizes this experience is uncommon in the current market and will not treat its absence as disqualifying.
• Familiarity with wholesale broker distribution dynamics.

Success Criteria

Performance in this role will be evaluated primarily on speed and accuracy of underwriting decisions, including referral turnaround time and the quality of ground-truthing feedback provided to the AI system. Additional criteria may be defined after the role's first several months, once baseline volume and referral patterns are established.

Growth Path

This role begins as an individual contributor position. As Comeryx's submission volume and underwriting team grow, there is potential for this position to expand into a team lead role.
