Job summary

Volkert, Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Transportation Project Manager to lead transportation projects in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The role requires a PE license and 10+ years in roadway design, traffic engineering, or transportation planning.

You will manage scopes, schedules, and budgets while maintaining client relationships with state DOTs and municipalities. The position emphasizes QA/QC, mentoring, and business development, with collaboration across regional leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning.
• Experience working with state DOTs, with a proven ability to meet DOT standards, schedules, and budgets.
• Strong knowledge of DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, or of traffic engineering and transportation planning principles.
• Demonstrated success managing medium to large, complex, or multi-office projects and client relationships.
• Proficiency with discipline-relevant software, such as OpenRoads Designer and Geopak for roadway design, or Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS for traffic engineering.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of transportation projects for state DOTs and local municipalities, including roadway design and traffic operations analysis.
• Serve as the primary client contact, building relationships with DOTs, municipalities, and stakeholders.
• Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans for successful delivery.
• Prepare, issue, and track project documentation throughout all phases.
• Oversee project financial performance, including forecasting and invoicing.
• Prepare correspondence, reports, and presentations for clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies.
• Support project submittals and bidding activities.
• Ensure QA/QC processes are followed and documented.
• Guide and mentor project teams to foster collaboration and technical excellence.
• Support business development, including proposals and marketing to municipal and DOT clients.
• Collaborate with regional leadership on strategic growth initiatives.

We are currently searching for an experienced Senior Transportation Project Manager to support our Gulf Regionlocated in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 10 years of experience in either Traffic or Roadway design.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Lead the delivery of transportation projects for state DOTs and local municipalities, which may include roadway design, plan review, traffic operations analysis, signal design and timing, corridor studies, safety evaluations, and long-range planning
• Serve as the primary client point of contact, building and maintaining strong relationships with DOTs, municipalities, and key stakeholders
• Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans to ensure successful project delivery
• Prepare, issue, and track project documentation, including contracts, change orders, and client approvals, for all phases of work
• Oversee project financial performance, including forecasting, invoicing, purchase orders, and accounts receivable
• Prepare correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and presentations for clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies
• Support project submittals and bidding activities
• Ensure quality assurance and quality control processes are followed and documented
• Guide and mentor project teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence
• Support business development efforts, including proposal development and marketing to municipal and DOT clients
• Collaborate with regional leadership on strategic growth initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned

What You Need To Have

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program
• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• 10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• Experience working with state DOTs, with a proven ability to meet DOT standards, schedules, and budgets
• Strong knowledge of DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, or of traffic engineering and transportation planning principles
• Demonstrated success managing medium to large, complex, or multi-office projects and client relationships
• Proficiency with discipline-relevant software, such as OpenRoads Designer and Geopak for roadway design, or Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS for traffic engineering
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Bonus Points If You Have

• Experience with ALDOT, MDOT, TDOT, or local government agencies
• 15+ years of experience
• PTOE, PTP, and/or RSP certifications
• Proven mentoring and client management experience
• Experience supporting business development, including proposals and client engagement
