Job summary

Volkert Inc. is seeking a Senior Transportation Project Manager to lead major transportation projects for state DOTs and municipalities across the Gulf Region (AL, MS, TN). The role requires a PE license, a civil engineering degree, and 10+ years in roadway design or traffic planning.

You will manage scopes, budgets, and teams, develop proposals, and ensure QA/QC. Strong client relations and software proficiency are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• 10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning.
• Experience working with state DOTs, with a proven ability to meet DOT standards, schedules, and budgets.
• Strong knowledge of DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, or of traffic engineering and transportation planning principles.
• Demonstrated success managing medium to large, complex, or multi-office projects and client relationships.
• Proficiency with discipline-relevant software such as OpenRoads Designer, Geopak, Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS.
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening; valid driver's license and satisfactory MVR.

Responsibilities

• Lead the delivery of transportation projects for state DOTs and local municipalities, including roadway design and traffic analyses.
• Serve as the primary client point of contact with DOTs, municipalities, and stakeholders.
• Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans.
• Prepare and track contracts, change orders, and client approvals across all project phases.
• Oversee project financial performance including forecasting, invoicing, and purchasing.
• Prepare correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and presentations for clients and regulators.
• Support submittals, bidding activities, and QA/QC processes.
• Guide and mentor project teams and contribute to business development with proposals.

We are currently searching for an experienced Senior Transportation Project Manager to support our Gulf Regionlocated in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee.

To be considered for this position, applicants must have, at minimum, 10 years of experience in either Traffic or Roadway design.

What you'll be doing:

• Lead the delivery of transportation projects for state DOTs and local municipalities, which may include roadway design, plan review, traffic operations analysis, signal design and timing, corridor studies, safety evaluations, and long-range planning
• Serve as the primary client point of contact, building and maintaining strong relationships with DOTs, municipalities, and key stakeholders
• Develop and manage project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans to ensure successful project delivery
• Prepare, issue, and track project documentation, including contracts, change orders, and client approvals, for all phases of work
• Oversee project financial performance, including forecasting, invoicing, purchase orders, and accounts receivable
• Prepare correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, and presentations for clients, vendors, and regulatory agencies
• Support project submittals and bidding activities
• Ensure quality assurance and quality control processes are followed and documented
• Guide and mentor project teams, fostering collaboration, accountability, and technical excellence
• Support business development efforts, including proposal development and marketing to municipal and DOT clients
• Collaborate with regional leadership on strategic growth initiatives
• Perform other duties as assigned

What you need to have:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited program
• Professional Engineer (PE) license
• 10+ years of relevant experience in roadway design, traffic engineering, and/or transportation planning
• Experience working with state DOTs, with a proven ability to meet DOT standards, schedules, and budgets
• Strong knowledge of DOT design methods, plan preparation, standards, and specifications, or of traffic engineering and transportation planning principles
• Demonstrated success managing medium to large, complex, or multi-office projects and client relationships
• Proficiency with discipline-relevant software, such as OpenRoads Designer and Geopak for roadway design, or Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS for traffic engineering
• Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Volkert adheres to federal guidelines, which may include testing for substances such as marijuana. Please note that federal regulations may differ from state-specific guidelines
• Valid driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle report (MVR)

Bonus points if you have:

• Experience with ALDOT, MDOT, TDOT, or local government agencies
• 15+ years of experience
• PTOE, PTP, and/or RSP certifications
• Proven mentoring and client management experience
• Experience supporting business development, including proposals and client engagement
