Job summary

Caltrans seeks a Senior Transportation Engineer in Alameda County to lead the Transportation Project Development process from early studies through PS&E, coordinating with internal teams, districts, and consultants to move projects forward.

The position requires a valid California PE license, possession of a valid driver's license, and occasional travel. Telework is Hybrid and the role is full-time permanent.

Job Description And Duties

Under the general direction of the Office Chief of Design Sonoma and Solano, the Senior Transportation Engineer, Caltrans carries out the duties and responsibilities associated with all phases of the Transportation Project Development process. This requires directing the work of an Transportation engineering staff as well as maintaining close communication and liaison between project team members, and the consultants; Division of Structures, and Headquarters functional units in order to expedite the planning and design process through early preliminary review, environmental and design studies to completion of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E).

Special Requirements
  • This position requires a valid Professional Engineer (PE) License issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers for appointment.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle. Occasional travel may be required.
  • Statement of Qualification (SOQ) is required.
Statement of Qualifications

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of each applicant’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. Please follow the instructions below; failure to include and complete the SOQ as instructed may result in the SOQ not being considered and in disqualification from the interview. Each question must be numbered and addressed in the same order as the questions below. The SOQ must be typed, no more than two pages in length, and 12-point Arial font.

  • Describe your ability to work cooperatively with and build partnerships internally among Region and District functions as well as with Caltrans’ external customers, including city and county staff.
  • Demonstrate your ability to relate to and work with interdisciplinary project teams to analyze situations accurately, identify potential conflicts, adopt effective strategies, and build consensus within the teams.
  • Describe your experience in implementing the Department’s project delivery policies, procedures, standards, and other factors relating to the design of transportation facilities.
  • Describe your ability to provide new perspectives and/or develop and implement innovative and effective solutions.
