Overview

AtkinsRéalis is seeking a Senior Transit Lead Architect to join our team in Alexandria, VA. Under limited supervision, the ideal candidate applies technical proficiency to solutions for architectural problems and coordination of related project activities. This position supports Business Development and presentation efforts in securing and advancing new projects.

Your role
  • Provide superior architectural team leadership and interact with senior management, playing a decisive leadership role in vertical transit projects.
  • Make timely design and technical decisions collaboratively while seeking advice of peers and supervisors.
  • Present yourself professionally to clients, maintain a 'seller-doer' approach, routinely interface with clients and keep them properly informed.
  • Perform programming, planning, and other conceptual design activities.
  • Develop designs and sketches for Revit-based construction documents, directing a project team accordingly.
  • Lead production of project documents through all stages of design and construction.
  • Mentor junior staff and lead a project team to produce a complete set of construction documents; perform QC review for design & red‑line documents for production staff in BlueBeam or another digital format.
  • Coordinate with sub‑consultants and other disciplines, mentoring junior staff to do the same.
  • Perform QC review and contribute needed information to a specification writer.
  • Create organized exhibits in BlueBeam and PowerPoint for client and team review.
  • Direct and perform site observation and field work, including site investigations, existing facility inventory, and field measured documentation.
  • Provide Project Managers with status reports of progress on architectural documents.
  • Complete assignments efficiently, accurately and timely, self‑performing quality control on work prior to publication.
  • Communicate regularly with the team and stay within the hours budgeted for tasks assigned.
  • Maintain and coordinate project BIM model and possess strong knowledge in construction document standards and conventions.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of building codes, TAS, ADAAG, federal and state compliance requirements, and experience with code review processes.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies and achieve consensus.
  • Consult product manufacturers, evaluate and obtain accurate cost information, select materials, and inspect architectural features in the field.
  • Understand building materials and construction methods.
  • Exhibit strong time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Effectively work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
  • Initiate tasks independently and follow through to delivery as needed.
  • Analyze information and propose effective solutions on own initiative.
  • Create basic and informative 3D models in BIM or another digital format.
  • Possess an entrepreneurial spirit and a desire for career advancement.
  • Resume with a large variety of project types both in size and complexity is a plus.
  • Perform other duties as the Supervisor determines necessary to support the Architecture Practice.
About you
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture required.
  • Must hold a Maryland Architect license.
  • LEED AP or other sustainability certification, or desire to obtain within first 6 months of hire is a plus.
  • Minimum 15‑20 years of relevant work experience, including all phases of architectural drafting, detailing, and coordination of consultants.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary work for complex architectural engineering projects.
  • Experience directing the work effort of junior staff to develop project documentation and manage project deliverables.
  • Working expertise in BIM/Revit; position is not production orientated.
  • Advanced knowledge of building systems and experience in implementation of various building systems and project types such as aviation, rail, transit, commercial, education.
  • Advanced knowledge of building codes, TAS, ADAAG, federal and state compliance requirements, and experience with code review processes.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems and design standards, including residential, office, institutional, and utility buildings.
  • Strong time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain and coordinate project BIM model and strong knowledge in construction document standards and conventions.
  • Ability to interact with regulatory agencies and achieve consensus.
  • Understanding of building materials and construction methods.
