Hanson Professional Services Inc. is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer (Part-Time) to lead transportation projects across Illinois, with hybrid/remote flexibility and offices in Chicago, Lisle, Peoria, or Springfield.

The role requires PE licensure, 15+ years of traffic/roadway experience, and strong QA/QC oversight. You will mentor teams, review designs, and support proposals while ensuring adherence to MUTCD, AASHTO, and IDOT standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and PE license are required.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in traffic engineering, roadway design, or related planning.
• Strong knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, ADA, IDOT standards and procedures.
• Experience reviewing deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to work independently and with teams.

Responsibilities

• Leading QA/QC reviews for traffic engineering, roadway design, transportation planning, and intersection projects.
• Review plans, calculations, reports, specifications, cost estimates, and technical documents for accuracy and compliance.
• Evaluate traffic operations analyses, safety studies, traffic impact assessments, signal warrant analyses, and intersection design recommendations.
• Review roadway geometric design elements including alignments, layouts, lane configurations, and multimodal accommodations.
• Verify compliance with federal, state, and local requirements including MUTCD, AASHTO, ADA, and agency standards.
• Identify design risks and quality concerns; propose practical solutions.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers and project teams.
• Support project managers in maintaining quality throughout development and delivery.
• Participate in technical reviews, workshops, and lessons learned sessions.
• Assist with proposal development and client presentations as needed.

We are seeking a Senior Traffic Engineer (Part-Time) to provide technical leadership, quality assurance/quality control oversight, and subject matter expertise for transportation projects. This position will support traffic engineering, roadway design, intersection design, transportation planning, and related infrastructure projects while ensuring that deliverables meet Hanson quality standards, client expectations, and applicable design criteria.

This position offers flexibility with hours based on workload and may be based in our Chicago, Lisle, Peoria, or Springfield, Illinois offices, with hybrid and remote work flexibility available.

A Day in the Life of a Senior Traffic Engineer

Responsibilities

• Leading QA/QC reviews for traffic engineering, roadway design, transportation planning, and intersection improvement projects.
• Reviewing plans, calculations, reports, specifications, cost estimates, and technical documents for accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Evaluating traffic operations analyses, safety studies, traffic impact assessments, signal warrant analyses, and intersection design recommendations.
• Reviewing roadway geometric design elements, including horizontal and vertical alignments, intersection layouts, lane configurations, and multimodal accommodations.
• Verifying compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, including MUTCD, AASHTO, ADA, and agency-specific standards.
• Identifying design risks, conflicts, and quality concerns while recommending practical and effective solutions.
• Providing technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, designers, and project teams.
• Supporting project managers in maintaining quality throughout project development and delivery.
• Participating in technical reviews, workshops, lessons learned sessions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Assisting with proposal development, technical approaches, staffing strategies, and client presentations as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering field.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in traffic engineering, roadway design, transportation planning, or related transportation infrastructure projects.
• Demonstrated experience reviewing transportation project deliverables for technical accuracy and compliance.
• Strong knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, ADA, IDOT, and local agency design standards and procedures.
• Experience conducting or reviewing traffic operations analyses, traffic studies, safety evaluations, and roadway design plans.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Illinois Professional Engineer license or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
• Experience supporting projects for IDOT, local agencies, municipalities, and public‑sector transportation clients.
• Prior experience mentoring engineering staff and leading technical quality reviews.
• Familiarity with traffic analysis and roadway design software utilized in transportation engineering projects.
