Job summary

Horrocks Engineers in Reno seeks a Senior Traffic Engineer to lead a team through forecasting, analysis, and design across MOT, signing, signals, ITS, and lighting for transportation projects. You will mentor staff and ensure compliance with MUTCD, FHWA, AASHTO, and agency standards.

Ideal candidate has PE licensure, PTOE preferred, 8-12+ years in traffic engineering, and strong client and communication skills. This on-site role offers competitive salary and award-winning benefits.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Professional Engineer (PE) licensure; PTOE certification preferred.
• 8-12+ years' experience in traffic analysis and traffic engineering design, with a focus on MOT, signing, signals, ITS, or lighting.
• Experience and relationships with transportation agencies are highly preferred.
• Knowledge of Bentley ProjectWise, MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SignCAD, and related software.

Responsibilities

• Manage and deliver design and preparation of MOT phasing strategies, signing, striping, and traffic control plans, as well as traffic signal, ITS, and lighting projects, from planning through design and construction support.
• Serve as technical lead on transportation design assignments, ensuring quality control and compliance with MUTCD, FHWA, AASHTO, and agency standards.
• Prepare and oversee studies, technical reports, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates from concept through final delivery.
• Coordinate with roadway, structural, planning, utility, drainage, and construction teams for integrated project delivery.

What are the core responsibilities for the role?

• Manage and deliver design and preparation of MOT phasing strategies, signing, striping, and traffic control plans, as well as traffic signal, ITS, and lighting projects, from planning through design and construction support
• Serve as technical lead on small to large-scale traffic design assignments, ensuring quality control and compliance with MUTCD, FHWA, AASHTO, DOT, and applicable agency standards
• Prepare and oversee the development of studies, technical reports, construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates from concept through final delivery
• Coordinate with roadway, structural, planning, utility, drainage, and construction teams to support integrated project delivery and ongoing business development efforts
• Aid in mentoring junior staff across traffic and related disciplines

Qualifications, Skills, And Competencies

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university
• Professional Engineering (PE) licensure; PTOE certification preferred
• 8-12+ years' experience in traffic analysis and traffic engineering design, with a focus on one or more of MOT, signing, signals, ITS, or lighting
• Experience and relationships with transportation agencies are highly preferred
• Knowledge and experience with Bentley ProjectWise, MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads, AutoCAD Civil 3D, SignCAD, and other applicable software common to the field of transportation engineering
• Experience with DOT's plan preparation procedures and standards
• Experience with Local Agency plan preparation procedures and standards
• Significant experience and understanding of local, regional, state, and federal design criteria
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills
• Self-motivated with solid organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to interact with and work cooperatively with clients and multi-disciplinary team members
• Ability to multitask while working on many projects at once
• Willingness to work on projects locally or in workshare with other offices
• Possess a proven history of meeting project deadlines and budgets
• A desire to grow personally and professionally with each project while working in a team environment to create designs and drawings supporting our client's overall project goals
