Job summary

Altria in Richmond, VA is seeking a Principal Toxicologist to lead preclinical toxicology efforts within the Biological Sciences Insights team, with option for remote work. A PhD or Masters in Toxicology or related field and 5+ years of preclinical testing experience are required.

You will design GLP and non-GLP studies, lead cross‑functional teams, and contribute to regulatory submissions for reduced‑risk tobacco products.

Qualifications

• PhD in toxicology or closely related field with 5+ years of experience in preclinical testing.
• Strong experience in regulatory risk assessment in a tobacco environment (preferred).
• Ability to analyze data from multiple lines of evidence to draw insights.
• Proven track record interpreting pre-clinical study outcomes (toxicity, histopathology).
• Study director/monitor experience in preclinical toxicity studies; in vivo experience desirable.
• Experience with NAMs (PBPK/BMD) and bioinformatics may be preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for scientists and non-scientists.
• Strong leadership and cross-functional collaboration with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME for regulatory and mechanistic toxicology testing for risk assessments.
• Lead data consolidation and analysis to support exposure-led risk assessments.
• Design and lead GLP and non-GLP studies across diverse test materials.
• Travel 10-20% to external labs for lab selection and study monitoring.
• Prepare results for internal communications and regulatory submissions.
• Identify data gaps and develop strategies to address.
• Lead cross-functional teams and represent BSI and Pre-Clinical.
• Engage with external scientific communities and present work.
