Job summary

Summit Technology Group in Keego Harbor, MI is seeking a Senior Tower Technician to lead on-site tower projects, ensure safety, and guide installation and maintenance of AM, FM, and TV broadcast towers and related equipment.

You will inspect, troubleshoot, and document work, train junior climbers, interface with engineering for scheduling and logistics, and travel regionally for multi-day assignments as required.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of tower climbing experience, with 3+ years in broadcast applications.
  • Knowledge of broadcast antenna systems, transmission lines, and RF safety.
  • Familiarity with rigging, hoisting, and tower rescue procedures.
  • NATE or ComTrain Tower Climber/Rescue certification (current).
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety card.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass DOT medical exam.
  • Willingness to travel regionally for multi-day projects.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Lead field crews during tower climbs, rigging, and installation activities.
  • Perform installation, removal, and alignment of antennas, feedlines, and transmission systems.
  • Conduct tower inspections, grounding audits, lighting maintenance, and FAA/FCC checks.
  • Supervise safety, conduct daily tailgate meetings, ensure OSHA/ANSI compliance.
  • Interpret drawings, site blueprints, and manufacturer docs for antenna systems.
  • Troubleshoot transmission and RF faults using testers and analyzers.
  • Complete post-job reports, photos, and client sign-offs.
  • Train and mentor junior climbers and ensure safety policy adherence.
  • Interface with Summit engineering for scheduling, material needs, and site logistics.

Overview

Summit Technology Group is expanding its in-house tower services team to support the installation, inspection, and maintenance of AM, FM, and TV broadcast towers, antennas, transmission lines, and associated equipment. The Senior Tower Technician will serve as the on-site lead for tower projects—responsible for safety, project planning, and technical execution. Between tower projects, Technician will be asked to assist on studio and transmitter site builds, repairs, maintenance, and decommissioning. Additional responsibilities include requisitioning tower hardware from our purchasing team and keeping safety gear, tower components, and other equipment in stock and in good working order.

Responsibilities
  • Lead field crews during tower climbs, rigging, and installation activities.
  • Perform installation, removal, and alignment of broadcast antennas, feedlines, and transmission systems (including 7/8”, 1-5/8”, 3” Heliax, rigid line, and waveguide).
  • Conduct tower inspections, grounding audits, lighting system maintenance, and FAA/FCC compliance checks.
  • Supervise job safety, conduct daily tailgate meetings, and ensure compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910/1926 and ANSI/TIA-222 standards.
  • Interpret structural drawings, site blueprints, and manufacturer documentation for antenna systems and mounts.
  • Troubleshoot transmission and RF line faults using sweep testers, TDRs, and analyzers.
  • Complete post-job reports, photo documentation, and client sign-off forms.
  • Train and mentor junior climbers and ensure adherence to company safety policies.
  • Interface with Summit engineering staff on scheduling, material needs, and site logistics.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years of tower climbing experience, with at least 3 years in broadcast applications (AM/FM/TV or STL).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of broadcast antenna systems, transmission line handling, and RF safety protocols (OET-65, ANSI/IEEE C95.1-2019).
  • Familiarity with rigging, hoisting, and tower rescue procedures.
  • NATE or ComTrain Tower Climber/Rescue certification (current).
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety card.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass DOT medical exam.
  • Comfortable traveling regionally for multi-day projects.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with ability to work with minimal supervision.
Preferred
  • AM skirt system or base-insulated tower experience.
  • Knowledge of RF exposure limits and site RF lockout/tagout procedures.
  • CPR/First Aid certified.
  • Ability to operate sweep gear, RF analyzers, and drones for visual inspection.
