Job summary

Shield AI in Seattle is seeking a Senior Tool Design Engineer to own tooling from concept through prove-out for complex aerospace systems. You will work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, and Safety to ensure robust tooling that supports pilot builds and rate production.

The role requires 7+ years in tooling or mechanical design, a related bachelor's degree, and strong knowledge of manufacturing processes.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of tooling design experience in aerospace or related manufacturing.
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Industrial, Mechatronics or related field.
• Experience in prototype manufacturing in startup or rapid-growth environment.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, composites, avionics and/or assembly.

Responsibilities

• Translate GD&T, datums, locators, clamps, tolerances into tooling requirements.
• Design assembly jigs, drill/bond fixtures, composite molds & trim fixtures, gauges, lifting/handling carts, and protective tooling using CATIA/NX/SolidWorks.
• Conduct FEA and hand calculations to confirm stiffness and safety factors.
• Generate Tool Design Packages with 3D models, 2D drawings, BOM, torque specs, materials, lifting points and safety labeling.
• Lead design reviews with ME, Quality, Safety, and Launch teams; perform human-factors evaluations.
• Oversee tool fabrication, NCR/ECR resolution, and shop-floor prove-out.
• Develop Tool Setup & Care Instructions, PM plans, and inspection checklists.
• Support First Article activities including CMM/laser-tracker alignment and gage strategy.
