The City of Alexandria, located in northern Virginia, borders the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington, and Fairfax counties. With a population of approximately 150,000 and a land area of 15.75 square miles, Alexandria is the seventh largest city in Virginia. As part of the Comprehensive Recovery Team (CRT), the Senior Therapist will provide clinical services to adults with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Responsibilities include delivering individual, group, and family therapy; developing and monitoring treatment plans; and conducting comprehensive assessments and diagnostic reviews.
The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of current best practices, including trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and integrated treatment for individuals with serious mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders. They should also possess knowledge of community resources, psychopharmacology, psychiatric disorders, and addiction. Skills required include planning, organizing, implementing, and administering treatment programs; evaluating clients’ mental status and risks; establishing effective relationships with clients, families, and community providers; routine data collection; developing quality standards; and clear communication skills.
The Center for Adult Services (CAS) offers programs in aging, protective services, clinical and emergency services, and community support for seniors and individuals with mental illness, disabilities, and substance use disorders. CAS emphasizes person-centered, compassionate care that supports self-determination, safety, and recovery.
Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Education, or related field; at least two years of post-graduate clinical experience with individuals with substance abuse and mental health disorders; licensure or license eligibility (LPC, LCSW, LSATP, or Clinical Psychologist licensed in Virginia). If license-eligible, licensure must be obtained within one year of appointment. Equivalent experience may be considered.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license, and bilingual skills in English and Spanish are required. The position involves providing clinical services, outreach, and case management to a seriously mentally ill and co-occurring population.
Successful completion of background checks including FBI/Federal Records, VA Child Abuse/Neglect Registry, Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database, education/certifications, and driver’s license verification.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM, with some evenings and flexible scheduling options.
