Job summary

Battelle Memorial Institute is seeking a Senior Technician in Washington, DC to join a multidisciplinary team supporting a government contract. You will perform hands-on laboratory support, focusing on sample preparation, analytical execution, equipment maintenance, and materials management.

You will work in a fast-paced lab, adhere to SOPs and safety practices, and assist in data documentation and routine QC.

Qualifications

• High School diploma with extensive lab experience in biology/chemistry.
• Ability to work in a BSL-2 laboratory setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Support execution of laboratory experiments and sample analysis per SOPs.
• Perform routine sample extraction and analysis with guidance from senior scientists.
• Operate lab equipment including pipettes, balances, pH meters, microscopes, centrifuges, plate readers.
• Document data clearly and perform initial data reviews before senior scientist review.
• Communicate progress and results to senior scientists and flag data not meeting criteria.
• Assist in maintenance of equipment and facilities under quality systems (ISO 9001:2015 or 21 CFR Part 58 GLP).
• Follow safety and security guidelines and manage supplies to avoid throughput delays.
• Train inexperienced staff in analysis and extraction methods.
• Contribute to writing standard operating procedures.
• Some domestic travel may be required.

Job Summary

As a Senior Technician, you will be joining a dynamic team performing cutting edge research across multiple disciplines. Operating in a collaborative environment, you will provide invaluable support to a large government contract. You will provide hands‑on technical laboratory support with a focus on sample processing, analytical execution, equipment maintenance, and materials management. In this role you will be expected to work efficiently in a fast‑paced operational environment, supporting laboratory throughput while ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and safety practices. You will play a key role in supporting the daily laboratory functions by preparing materials, operating and maintaining equipment, tracking supplies, and supporting accurate and timely completion of analytical tasks.

This full-time position is contingent upon contract award and will be in Washington DC.

Responsibilities

• Support execution of laboratory experiments and sample analysis rooted in chemistry and biological sciences.
• Independently perform routine sample extraction and analysis experiments in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and/or work instructions with guidance from senior scientists
• Operate lab equipment to include pipetting devices, balances, pH meters, microscopes, centrifuges, plate readers, etc.
• Document experimental data clearly and consistently. Compile data and perform first line technical and quality control review prior to submission to senior scientist for final review
• Actively communicate progress and results to senior scientists and report data that does not meet acceptance criteria
• Actively participate in maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities within structured quality frameworks (e.g., ISO 9001:2015 or 21 CFR Part 58 GLP)
• Follow established safety and security guidelines
• Maintain laboratory supply stocks and critical reagents anticipating needs and use rates so that sample throughput is not compromised.
• Train inexperienced staff in sample analysis and extraction methods
• Contribute to writing of standard operating procedures
• Some domestic travel may be required.

Key Qualifications

• High School diploma and 9 years laboratory experience focused on sample preparation and analysis using scientific methods in biology and/or chemistry.
• Ability and willingness to work in biological safety level 2 (BSL-2) laboratories
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to understand and follow written procedures
• The ability to work in a team environment
• Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory to perform assigned duties including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 25 pounds, and work in the proximity of hazardous/infectious materials
• Self-motivated and able to work in a fast‑paced environment with competing priorities
• Sole U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001:2015, ISO17025, or 21 CFR Part 58 GLP)
• Interest and ability to learn and apply new skills in multiple subject areas
• Current or previously held security clearance

Salary Range

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The hourly range for this role is $22.50 - $30.90 per hour, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
