Reporting directly to the Director of Tax & Compliance, this critical role will be responsible for ensuring the organization remains compliant with Federal and State tax regulations while managing corporate tax processes. The Sr. Manager will be key in supporting the preparation and review of corporate tax provisions, income tax filings, and Form 990s, as well as working closely with the Senior Accountant to manage tax true-ups and filings. Additionally, this role will assist the Fund Investment Reporting and Management team (FIRM) in providing tax strategies and overseeing more than 100 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) partnership tax returns. The ideal candidate will possess a deep knowledge of IRS tax rules, strong communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist the tax team and external service providers with the preparation and documentation of all required corporate tax returns, including year-end provisions, Federal and State filings, true-ups, and Form 990s.
  2. Regularly update tax process narratives, ensuring all necessary documentation for tax filings is thorough and accurate.
  3. Support the tax team in process improvements to build a more efficient tax function, focusing on tax planning, organizational structure analysis, and cost reduction initiatives.
  4. Manage the external tax compliance calendar and project timelines in coordination with the Senior Accountant, Tax & Compliance.
  5. Review extension calculations and quarterly estimated tax payments to ensure accuracy.
  6. Collaborate with the tax team, business unit finance leaders, and government tax authorities to resolve any tax, compliance, or business license-related issues as they arise.
  7. Provide support to the Fund Investment Reporting and Management team (FIRM) with over 100 Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) tax returns and related questions.
  8. Stay up to date with new tax guidance and regulatory changes, advising the Director of Tax & Compliance on any updates that may affect the organization.
  9. Draft technical memoranda to document tax positions and provide updates to tax files and the board.
  10. Review corporate and personal property returns prepared by the Senior Accountant, Tax & Compliance.
  11. Assist the legal department with the information necessary for various state registrations and licensing requirements.
  12. Contribute to ongoing process improvements, offering recommendations to enhance organizational efficiency and improve cross-team communication.

Qualifications:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required; a Master’s degree in taxation is a plus.
  2. CPA, Enrolled Agent certification, or actively working toward certification is preferred.
  3. A minimum of 6 years of experience in corporate and partnership tax, with experience in either a corporate tax and compliance function or public accounting.
  4. In-depth knowledge of tax and compliance laws surrounding for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, including tax issues related to partnerships, corporations, and related parties.
  5. Experience preparing and reviewing Form 1120s, 1065s, and 990s.
  6. Strong research skills with the ability to analyze complex tax issues and effectively communicate recommendations and conclusions.
  7. Knowledge of multi-company and multi-state income tax calculations, state apportionment rules, and estimated tax rules.
  8. Familiarity with ASC 740 requirements.
  9. Excellent financial, analytical, organizational, and quantitative skills.
  10. Ability to manage competing priorities and meet both external and internal deadlines.
  11. Highly motivated with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating excellent written and oral communication skills.
  12. Demonstrated professionalism, strong ethics, and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  13. Experience with accounting systems is preferred; familiarity with Workday is a plus.
  14. Experience with AI tools is an advantage.
  15. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
