Job summary

Blue Origin seeks a Senior Systems Integration Engineer to own the integration of battery products across programs. You will define interfaces, size systems, and perform trade studies to drive reusable, off-the-shelf solutions for spaceflight programs.

Responsibilities include owning ICDs, roadmapping, and leading cross-program collaboration with engineering, test, and manufacturing teams to enable rapid development and risk reduction.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 7+ years of experience in battery or power system integration engineering.
  • Experience sizing battery systems from requirements and loads.
  • Strong knowledge of lithium-ion cell selection, chemistry trades, performance and aging behavior, and safety considerations.
  • Experience owning interfaces and interface control documentation between a component or subsystem and a larger vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary technical interface between the battery organization and all Blue Origin programs, engaging early in concept and proposal phases before architectures are locked.
  • Elicit, define, and negotiate battery and interface requirements with programs, including load and duty cycle profiles, energy and power needs, environments, mass and volume constraints, mission life, redundancy, and safety and human-rating requirements.
  • Own the interfaces: develop and manage standard ICDs covering electrical, mechanical, thermal, data, and ground support interfaces, and drive closure of interface issues between the battery product and the host vehicle.
  • Perform battery sizing and trade studies, including load profile analysis, energy and power margin assessment, thermal and cycle life implications, and mass, volume, and cost trades.
  • Recommend cell chemistry and battery technology for each application, and clearly explain the trades and the risks behind the recommendation.
  • Actively promote and defend Blue Origin's catalog of qualified off-the-shelf battery products, guiding programs to reuse and pushing back on unnecessary custom development.
  • Own the battery product roadmap: aggregate demand and requirements across all programs, identify gaps in the current product line, build the business case for new products, and prioritize with the design, test, and manufacturing teams.
  • Create and maintain the artifacts that make self-service possible — product datasheets, selection guides, standard ICDs, sizing tools and calculators, application notes, and reference designs.
  • Define and manage the exception path: when an off-the-shelf product genuinely does not fit, establish what "close enough" looks like, manage deviations and waivers, or make the case for a new development.
  • Support programs through vehicle integration, test, and operations, reviewing their charge and discharge concept of operations, BMS and power system interfaces, ground handling, storage, and transportation plans, and supporting troubleshooting at integration sites.
  • Provide inputs to Supply Chain and program planning on lead times, quantities, obsolescence, and forward demand
  • Capture lessons learned and recurring program pain points and feed them back into product improvements and roadmap decisions

Job description

Application close date:Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities. As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will own the integration of Blue Origin's battery products into every program in the company. When a launch vehicle, spacecraft, lander, or ground system needs stored energy, you are the engineer they come to — and you will help them get to the right answer fast. You will pull mission needs out of programs, translate them into battery and interface requirements, size and select the solution, and steer them toward our existing qualified products wherever they fit.Your success is measured in reuse and speed. Every program that integrates a proven off-the-shelf battery instead of commissioning a one-off design saves the company development cost, qualification cost, schedule, and risk. You will also aggregate what you learn across all of those integrations into a forward-looking battery product roadmap that tells us what to build next and when.As a Senior Systems Integration Engineer, you will:Serve as the primary technical interface between the battery organization and all Blue Origin programs, engaging early in concept and proposal phases before architectures are lockedElicit, define, and negotiate battery and interface requirements with programs, including load and duty cycle profiles, energy and power needs, environments, mass and volume constraints, mission life, redundancy, and safety and human-rating requirementsOwn the interfaces: develop and manage standard ICDs covering electrical, mechanical, thermal, data, and ground support interfaces, and drive closure of interface issues between the battery product and the host vehiclePerform battery sizing and trade studies, including load profile analysis, energy and power margin assessment, thermal and cycle life implications, and mass, volume, and cost tradesRecommend cell chemistry and battery technology for each application, and clearly explain the trades and the risks behind the recommendationActively promote and defend Blue Origin's catalog of qualified off-the-shelf battery products, guiding programs to reuse and pushing back on unnecessary custom developmentOwn the battery product roadmap: aggregate demand and requirements across all programs, identify gaps in the current product line, build the business case for new products, and prioritize with the design, test, and manufacturing teamsCreate and maintain the artifacts that make self-service possible — product datasheets, selection guides, standard ICDs, sizing tools and calculators, application notes, and reference designsDefine and manage the exception path: when an off-the-shelf product genuinely does not fit, establish what \"close enough\" looks like, manage deviations and waivers, or make the case for a new developmentSupport programs through vehicle integration, test, and operations, reviewing their charge and discharge concept of operations, BMS and power system interfaces, ground handling, storage, and transportation plans, and supporting troubleshooting at integration sitesProvide inputs to Supply Chain and program planning on lead times, quantities, obsolescence, and forward demandCapture lessons learned and recurring program pain points and feed them back into product improvements and roadmap decisionsWe are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!Qualifications:Undergraduate degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field7+ years of direct experience in battery, power system, or electrical systems integration engineeringDemonstrated experience sizing battery systems from application requirements, including load profile analysis and energy and power margin assessmentStrong working knowledge of lithium-ion cell selection, chemistry trades, performance and aging behavior, and safety considerationsExperience owning interfaces and interface control documentation between a component or subsystem and a larger vehicle or systemExperience in a cross-program, applications, or customer-facing technical role where you had to influence decisions you did not controlAbility to distill complex technical trades into clear recommendations for engineers, program managers, and executivesHighly organized team player with excellent technical communication skills (written and verbal)Ability to work independently and as part of a team on rapid development programsAbility to travel to and work at remote sites supporting integration, commissioning, and trainingDesired:Master's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Aerospace Engineering or related field3+ years in space applications; experience with human-rated systemsPrior applications engineering or product line engineering role at a cell manufacturer, battery integrator, or OEMExperience owning or contributing to a technology or product roadmapFamiliarity with spacecraft and launch vehicle electrical power system architecture, including BMS, charge control, and power distributionExperience with requirements management and systems engineering tools and processes (DOORS, Cameo, Jama, or similar)Experience with battery modeling and sizing tools, and scripting for analysis and tool development (Python, MATLAB)Familiarity with applicable standards and requirements (e.g., NASA JSC-20793, AIAA S-122, UN 38.3)Experience in development of launch vehicles or spacecraftExperience with safety-critical systems development (automotive, aerospace, medical, etc.)Experience across multiple portions of the product life cycleBase Pay Range for:WA applicants is $156,802.00 - $219,522.45Other site ranges may differCulture StatementDon’t meet all desired requirements?
