Job summary

GXO Logistics, Inc. is seeking a Senior IT UNIX / Linux Engineer to administer, optimize, and scale UNIX/Linux environments across GXO’s cloud platforms, data centers, and distribution sites.

The role emphasizes automation, performance, and operational excellence to support enterprise applications and databases. The candidate will lead technical initiatives, provide guidance to junior engineers, and participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or equivalent related work or military experience
  • 5-7 years of UNIX/Linux system administration experience within a production environment
  • Strong expertise with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL 8 and 9), Debian, Solaris, and HPUX operating systems
  • Experience administering VMware vSphere environments
  • Experience with Rubrik backup software and enterprise backup technologies
  • Ability to develop and troubleshoot shell scripts
  • Strong knowledge of Linux system administration, user account management, patch management, and security best practices
  • Experience managing Linux logical volume management (LVM and SSM)
  • Ability to identify and resolve system, resource, storage, and networking issues using tools such as sar, top, and nmon
  • Experience with Docker, Ansible, and Terraform
  • Understanding of networking technologies including TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, NTP, and routing concepts
  • Experience with LDAP authentication and enterprise identity management
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools such as SolarWinds
  • Knowledge of IT service management processes and tools, including ServiceNow and ITIL frameworks
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a matrixed environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to create detailed technical documentation

Responsibilities

  • Maintain UNIX/Linux server environments and ensure optimal performance, availability, and reliability of enterprise systems
  • Develop, test, and implement system enhancements and configuration improvements following established change management processes
  • Create and maintain automation scripts to improve the efficiency of daily operational and maintenance activities
  • Evaluate, configure, test, and deploy new technologies to enhance infrastructure capabilities and support business objectives
  • Maintain accurate configuration and asset management records for hardware, software, and infrastructure changes
  • Design, implement, and execute standardized procedures to monitor system health and generate operational reports and logs
  • Lead and manage infrastructure projects, ensuring timely completion and successful delivery of technical objectives
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and support to Level 2 UNIX/Linux engineers, assisting with incident resolution and operational best practices
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call support rotation and support critical incident response activities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional IT teams on performance improvements, new site deployments, relocations, upgrades, and infrastructure initiatives

What you'll do on a typical day
  • Maintain UNIX/Linux server environments and ensure optimal performance, availability, and reliability of enterprise systems

What you need to succeed at GXO
At a minimum, you'll need

It'd be great if you also have:
  • Red Hat or Linux certification
  • ITIL certification
  • Experience with Pure Storage technologies
  • Experience supporting cloud infrastructure platforms
  • Knowledge of SAN and NAS storage technologies
  • Familiarity with security technologies including firewalls and intrusion prevention systems (IPS)
  • Advanced VMware administration experiencee
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to quickly learn new technologies
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence
  • Ability to identify opportunities for automation, performance improvements, and process optimization
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
