Job summary

Penumbra, Inc. in Alameda, CA, seeks a Senior Systems Administrator to design, implement, and support enterprise systems across on‑premises and cloud environments.

You will be the SME for OS and core infrastructure services, ensuring availability, performance, security, and scalability. You’ll collaborate with an international support team to manage AD/Entra ID, Azure IaaS/PaaS, Windows and Linux servers, and backup/recovery processes, while driving automation and governance.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of enterprise‑level systems administration/engineering experience.
  • Proficiency with Windows Server, AD/Entra ID, ADFS, DNS, DHCP, PowerShell, Intune, SCCM/SCOM.
  • 5+ years Azure IaaS/PaaS and Microsoft 365 (Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams).
  • Experience with Linux (RHEL preferred) and SAN/NAS storage.
  • Experience with backup/recovery procedures and on‑premises virtualization (Hyper‑V/VMware).

Job description

As a Senior Systems Administrator at Penumbra, you will play a critical role in determining the company's long‑term goals. You will be responsible for the administration, implementation, optimization, maintenance, and recovery of enterprise systems across on‑premises and cloud‑based environments. This role serves as a subject matter expert for complex operating systems and core infrastructure services, supporting system availability, performance, security, and scalability.

Working as part of an international support team, the Sr. System Administrator recommends and implements improvements to infrastructure systems, operating platforms, and related applications. Systems supported may include Microsoft Azure IaaS, PaaS, Microsoft Office 365, EntraID, MFA, Information Protection, Active Directory, MS Windows Server, Linux Server OS, SAN/NAS storage, enterprise backup platforms, and related infrastructure technologies. The role may also support infrastructure configurations related to ERP and integration platforms, including SAP and Dell Boomi.

What You’ll Work On
Infrastructure & Platform Ownership
  • Manages the day‑to‑day operations of infrastructure hardware and software, including system performance, configuration, maintenance, patching, and repair.
  • Administers, maintains, and optimizes enterprise systems across on‑premises and cloud environments.
  • Applies revisions to host system firmware and software and works with vendors to assist support activities.
  • Supports core infrastructure services, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Microsoft PKI, Microsoft Entra ID, Group Policy, SCCM, Intune, Bitlocker, Key Management, Privileged Identity Management, Log Analytics, and Digital Rights Management.
  • Manages and supports SAN/NAS storage infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, capacity, and scalability.
  • Maintains enterprise backup and recovery systems, including procedures, documentation, and restoration processes for host operating systems and host‑based applications.
  • Supports Microsoft Azure IaaS/PaaS, Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Linux Server, and related infrastructure platforms.
  • Performs system health monitoring, capacity planning, lifecycle management, patching, and firmware/software updates.
  • Supports virtualization platforms, including Hyper‑V and VMware.
  • Provides after‑hours on‑call support on a rotation schedule with other staff members.
Troubleshooting, Automation & Continuous Improvement
  • Leads troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis for complex infrastructure issues, working with vendors and internal support teams as needed.
  • Develops and maintains infrastructure automation capabilities to improve service delivery, operational efficiency, and business continuity.
  • Creates tools, procedures, and documentation to support client support, applications development, and other internal teams.
  • Recommends system redesigns, configuration changes, and technology improvements to strengthen performance, reliability, security, and scalability.
  • Stays current with developments in systems administration, infrastructure automation, cloud services, and enterprise security technologies.
Security, Compliance & Governance
  • Enforces established procedures and governance policies to maintain security and protect infrastructure from unauthorized access, misuse, and service disruption.
  • Understands and applies relevant security, privacy, compliance, and quality principles in accordance with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Maintains procedures, programs, and documentation for backup and restoration of host operating systems and host‑based applications.
What You Contribute
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field with 8+ years of enterprise‑level systems administration and/or engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8+ years of experience supporting Microsoft technologies, including Windows Server, Active Directory/Entra ID, ADFS, DNS, DHCP, PowerShell, Intune, and SCCM/SCOM.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting Microsoft Azure IaaS/PaaS and Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, etc.
  • Experience administering Linux systems; RHEL experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting SAN/NAS storage environments.
  • Experience with enterprise backup and recovery procedures.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills in Windows operating systems and TCP/IP networking.
  • Experience deploying, configuring, and maintaining on‑premises virtualization platforms, including Hyper‑V and VMware.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining PKI or similar certificate management tools.
  • Experience automating infrastructure provisioning (IaC) and configuration management.
  • Experience onboarding applications for SSO with a strong understanding of SAML and OpenID protocols.
  • Windows Server Hybrid Core Infrastructure and Advanced Services certification will be a plus.
  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience administering ERP and integration platforms, such as SAP and Dell Boomi.
  • Experience with Cisco UCS and other network hardware administration.
  • DevOps experience in configuration management and infrastructure automation.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and document complex system design activities and configure systems in alignment with institutional policies and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, handle concurrent projects, and respond effectively to urgent or complex operational issues.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skill.
Working Conditions

General office environment. Willingness and ability to work on site. Requires some lifting and moving of up to 10 pounds. Must be able to move between buildings and floors, remain stationary and use a computer or other standard office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine, for an extensive period of time each day. Must be able to read, prepare emails, and produce documents and spreadsheets, communicate, and exchange accurate information with employees at all levels on a daily basis.

Annual Base Salary Range: $140,000 – $200,000 per year
