Qualus is seeking a Senior Protection and Controls Engineer to lead protective relay design and substation automation efforts in the Engineering Department. The role emphasizes developing protection philosophy, setting devices, and delivering robust solutions for large and complex power systems.

Qualifications include an engineering degree with 8–10 years of applicable experience, and a PE license or equivalent experience without PE.

• Complete relay coordination analyses and determine settings for substation projects.
• Develop and apply company protection philosophy and protective schemes, including substation automation.
• Prepare studies and reports for executive management and customers.
• Apply technical expertise to large, complex protection problems and disturbances.
• Ensure quality and coordinate with construction forces; incorporate customer input.
• Follow all policies and regulations, including NERC/WECC mandates.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Position Overview

Power your future with Qualus in our Engineering Department as an Senior Protection and Controls Engineer. As a Senior P&C Engineer you will be responsible for protective relaying equipment, determining device settings, and developing protection, control, and automation philosophy.

Responsibilities

• Completes relay coordination analyses and determines appropriate settings for substation projects.
• Leads the development of company system protection philosophy; design of protection, control, and substation automation schemes, and specify relaying and associated equipment, including automation methodologies and large to complex remedial action schemes.
• Performs studies, prepares, and provides reports to executive management, internal and external customers.
• Apply technical expertise and knowledge in developing state-of-the-art solutions for large to complex protection problems, including the analysis of power system disturbances.
• Ensures quality control and external customer service on assigned projects by providing construction support and coordination with construction forces and proactively seeking and incorporating customer input.
• Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes, and regulations applicable to position and company, including NERC/WECC mandates.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

Engineering degree from an accredited college/university with 8 years industry experience and a Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineering degree from an accredited college/university with 10 years of industry experience without a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Demonstrated knowledge of:

• Electric utility system protection principles
• Protection philosophies employed across the company.

Demonstrated skills such as:

• Technical analyses utilizing appropriate computer modeling techniques.
• Time management, organizational, oral, and written communication, interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
