The Senior System Engineer (SSE) is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, enabling staff, volunteers, and Partners.

This individual will support MSP service delivery by helping plan, scope, implement, and transition technical solutions across multiple client environments. Responsibilities include assessing client needs, defining business and technical benefits, documenting standards, assisting with onboarding and migration efforts, and ensuring projects are delivered in a way that improves long-term supportability. The Senior Systems Engineer will work closely with internal service desk, project, and account management teams to move solutions from planning through implementation while maintaining clear communication, accurate PSA documentation, and alignment with client expectations and SLA requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Engineer solutions for various project and operational needs.
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure Servers, Desktop hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Install and configure systems such as supports technology infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures.
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the General Manager
MSP Client Support
  • Manage and support IT infrastructure across multiple client environments, maintaining consistent standards while adapting to each client's unique environment and requirements.
  • Monitor client systems, networks, and endpoints using RMM (remote monitoring and management) tooling; respond to and resolve alerts within defined SLA windows.
  • Document client environments, configurations, and changes in the PSA/ticketing system to maintain accurate, up-to-date records for the team.
  • Perform onboarding of new MSP clients, including network assessments, infrastructure documentation, and migration of systems to managed standards.
  • Coordinate with account managers and client stakeholders on project scoping, timelines, and technical recommendations.
  • Escalate and collaborate with vendors (ISPs, hardware/software vendors, cloud providers) on behalf of clients to resolve complex issues.
  • Contribute to and enforce standardized client environment baselines to improve supportability and reduce ticket volume across the client base.
Operations & Support
  1. Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems, and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  2. Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  3. Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site, as necessary.
  4. Perform regular file archival and purge, as necessary.
  5. Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
Maintenance
  1. Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services, as necessary.
  2. Upgrade and configure system software that supports technology infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.
  3. Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
  4. Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  5. Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
  6. Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes with little advanced notice. No regular travel required for this position.
