Job summary

Job description

Role Summary

The Senior Superintendent will plan, manage and execute all aspects of significantly complex or multiple projects. This position will manage the team, plan construction sequencing and meet project goals to achieve timely and profitable completion of each project. All activities support the strategy, vision and values of JE Dunn.

Key Role Responsibilities – Core
  • Lead all aspects of the company’s safety culture and create awareness by demonstrating commitment to an injury‑free environment through individual actions and mentoring others. Investigates safety incidents and retrains staff and needed.
  • Provide management of subcontractors and organization of the overall job and workflow.
  • Manage and oversee company staff, subcontractors, suppliers and programs such as Safety, Quality and EEO for a small project or a major portion of a larger project.
  • Develop work plans for subcontractors and self‑performed work.
  • Coordinate and manage the care, custody and control of the project site.
  • Lead various meetings including daily standup and weekly trade meetings.
  • Attend, manage and participate in appropriate progress and/or project OAC meetings.
  • Create, manage, change and implement the project’s schedule as needed, in conjunction with the Project Manager.
  • May be responsible for tracking and monitoring project budget and costs using the project management system’s cost reports and data from the project manager.
  • Communicate key project information to owners, design team, governing authorities, subcontractors, suppliers and other departments.
  • Follow the project filing and documentation organization system as dictated for the project. Update drawings, logs, diaries and inspection notebooks.
  • Approve and/or record unit cost information for weekly reports and complete daily reports, logs and tracking reports.
  • Evaluate progress on self‑perform work and make adjustments as needed.
  • Manage material and equipment needs for the project.
  • Support the MOC (Material and Other Costs) and DLSC (Dunn Logistics Service Center) procurement and approval processes.
  • Assist in the selection of the formwork, tools and equipment necessary to complete self‑perform operations.
  • Manage timecard approval process to ensure accurate hour reporting and proper cost codes.
  • Ensure quality compliance through use of specifications, setting quality standards, in‑house QA/QC and outside resources.
  • Support the project closeouts by supervising pre‑punch activities and coordinating activities with the owner, architect and governing authorities.
  • Gain understanding of the project pursuit process and methodology.
  • Participate with the field operations leadership and the project team to put together a project pre‑plan; implement, monitor and adjust as needed throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Partner with field leadership to establish field staffing for their assigned project.
  • Partner with project management to identify schedule and costs associated with project changes.
  • Participate in the negotiation process with the owner and architect to gain agreement for project changes.
  • Participate with the project team in preparation and presentation for all project review meetings, including the monthly review process and other key project meetings.
  • Participate in the project buy‑out meetings with subcontractors and vendors.
  • Understand and apply the terms and conditions of the owner and subcontractor contracts for the project.
  • Be responsible for identifying and recruiting top talent.
  • Lead, support and promote a culture of diversity and inclusion within JE Dunn. Understand JE Dunn’s policy of non‑discrimination and ensure positive, proactive implementation throughout the organization.

  • Manage complex stand‑alone or multiple projects from initial planning to completion.
  • Manage project(s) with multiple superintendents.
  • Influence and manage delivery results through others.
  • Understand and execute relevant key strategic initiatives to support company strategy.
  • Provide training and education to support company and/or region training initiatives.
  • Engage in business, industry and community activities to build and strengthen external relationships.
  • Take a lead role with the project team in the project pursuit process.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team on related presentations and marketing activities.
  • Develop new business opportunities and generate future work by cultivating and maintaining long‑term relationships with clients.
  • Assume responsibility for management, scheduling, production, safety and quality on projects or a portion of projects.
  • Identify, understand and actively manage project risks.
  • Utilize awareness, experience and knowledge to identify problems and recommend solutions for review and implementation by the team.
  • Manage deliverables provided by a variety of internal resources and functions such as IPS, logistics, etc.

  • Knowledge of self‑perform and labor productivity (Advanced).

  • Knowledge of layout skill (Advanced).
  • Knowledge of crane flagging and rigging (Advanced).
  • Ability to understand document changes and impact to the project schedule.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field (Preferred).
Experience
  • 10+ years construction experience.
  • 8+ years field supervision experience.
  • Experience leading Lean principles on projects (Preferred).
Working Environment
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license required.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • May require periods of travel and/or relocation.
  • May be exposed to extreme conditions (hot or cold).
  • Must be willing to work non‑traditional hours to meet project needs.
  • Frequent activity: Standing, Walking, Climbing, Bending, Reaching above shoulder, Pushing, Pulling.
  • Occasional activity: Sitting, Viewing computer screen.
