Job description

Position Overview

Industrial projects don’t wait for perfect conditions – they demand skilled engineers who can solve complex problems, lead with confidence, and design structures that stand up to the realities of construction and operations. We are looking for Structural Engineering leaders who have a strong background in structural design, experience in leading other engineers, and managing projects to support a variety of projects across North America. This role blends deep technical design expertise with hands‑on collaboration across disciplines, design and construction teams, and project stakeholders. You will drive structural engineering from concept through construction, ensuring that every foundation, steel system, and structural component is safe, efficient, and buildable. If you thrive in a fast‑paced environment and want your work to directly influence cost, schedule and field construction, this is the level of impact you are looking for! Individuals with experience in steel, concrete, and modularized equipment/buildings are a great fit.

Location

These positions can either be based out of our Kansas City, Kansas, Lone Tree, Colorado, or Minneapolis, Minnesota offices.

Responsibilities
  • Lead structural design efforts for moderate to large industrial projects, including research, system selection, detailed analysis, and preparation of engineering drawings. Serve as the structural Lead on one or more projects as assigned.
  • Apply and uphold department and industry standards while overseeing the development of structural calculations, drawings, and specifications to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.
  • Mentor and guide entry‑ and mid‑level engineers and designers, providing technical direction, coaching, and performance feedback to support their professional growth.
  • Utilize Building Information Modeling (BIM) to develop plans, models, drawings, and detailed structural documentation that support coordination and constructability.
  • Integrate EPC and contractual requirements—including customer RFPs, professional service agreements, and project‑specific obligations—into the structural design approach to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Coordinate closely with internal and external partners, including cross‑discipline engineering teams, construction personnel, vendors, fabricators, and owners to resolve structural issues and maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and recommend improvements to standards, workflows, and processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency across the department.
  • Develop, monitor, and update project plans, schedules, and budgets, including staffing forecasts, and provide regular updates to project and department management. Support estimating, scheduling, and project controls with structural input as needed.
  • Support department leadership in establishing and achieving performance goals, contributing to continuous improvement and long‑term departmental success.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (structural, civil, or architectural) from an ABET accredited four‑year college or university program. Some master’s coursework preferred.
  • Current Professional Engineer License (PE) is required.
  • At least 15 years’ experience in structural engineering and design in both concrete and steel, with at least 3 years working in industrial, manufacturing, water/wastewater or building markets for both greenfield and brownfield projects. EPC and/or design/build experience is preferred.
  • Experience with modular structural design highly desired.
  • 3+ years leading or mentoring a team of 3–20 engineers/designers and leading a large project or 2–6 smaller projects, managing scope, schedule, and man‑hour utilization. Must communicate effectively and constructively with other team members and disciplines both verbally and in written form.
  • Functional in utilizing spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and computer operations.
  • Knowledgeable with and experience in engineering software: CSi SAP2000, SAFE, and RISA Suite are required.
  • Knowledge and experience with BIM software: Revit preferred, AutoCAD, and Navisworks. 3D modeling experience required.
  • Must represent Kiewit Industrial Engineering in a professional manner to owners, contractors, vendors, and any other contacts outside Kiewit organization.
Other Requirements
  • Regular, reliable attendance.
  • Work productively and meet deadlines timely.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment.
  • Perform work safely and effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.

Base Compensation: $138,000/yr – $170,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
