Job summary

LJB Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Bridge Engineer to support and grow our Transportation Practice in Charlotte, North Carolina.

You will lead bridge design efforts from preliminary to final design and coordinate with DOT and local governments to deliver safe, efficient infrastructure. The role requires 10+ years of bridge design, a PE license, and a strong background in design‑build projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a Structural emphasis required.
  • PE license required.
  • 10+ years of bridge/culvert design experience.
  • DOT bridge design experience and knowledge of DOT guidelines (NCDOT preferred).
  • Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and Manual for Bridge Evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering design tasks for bridge projects from preliminary to final design.
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
  • Establish relationships with client staff and project managers, especially DOT and local governments.
  • Provide design services for design‑bid‑build and design‑build bridge projects.
  • Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans.
  • Coordinate design activities between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
  • Participate in project decisions on technical approaches, cost, and scheduling.
  • Identify schedule and cost variances and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead and participate in transportation-related professional organizations.

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Structural Bridge Engineer to support and grow our Transportation Practice in our Charlotte, North Carolina office.

Salary range: $128,000 – 185,000 based upon experience, certifications, and regional market standards.

Senior Structural Bridge Engineer Essential Functions
  • Perform engineering design tasks for bridge projects from preliminary to final design.
  • Develop specifications, cost estimates, and prepare final bid packages.
  • Have established working relationships and contact with client technical staff and project managers, especially in DOT and local governments.
  • Provide engineering design services for traditional design‑bid‑build projects and design‑build bridge projects.
  • Mentor and assist junior engineers in developing final design plans.
  • Coordinate design activities and meetings between design staff, subcontractors, and client managers.
  • Participate in project decisions regarding technical approaches, cost, and scheduling performance.
  • Identify schedule and cost variances and develop and implement recommendations for corrective action.
  • Participate in projects by completing tasks within schedule and budget with teams comprised of different disciplines.
  • Actively participate and serve in leadership positions in transportation related organizations such as ASHE, ASCE, NCSEA, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a Structural emphasis.
  • P.E. license.
  • 10+ years of bridge/culvert design experience.
  • DOT bridge design experience and thorough understanding of DOT guidelines, procedures, and plan preparation (ODOT, NCDOT or MaineDOT preferred).
  • Thorough knowledge of AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Relationships with DOT and municipalities.
Core Skills
  • Design-bid-build and design-build bridge project delivery.
  • Coordination with DOTs, municipalities, client project managers, subcontractors, and multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Project scheduling, budgeting, cost tracking, and corrective action planning.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and supporting development of final design plans.
  • Leadership and active participation in transportation-related professional organizations.
